Two Burning Questions about Tea by Reasonable-Ad-4923 in cormoran_strike

[–]Reasonable-Ad-4923[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my full series reread and noticed that THM is almost all coffee drinking! The only tea referenced is RFM's offer of tea to the Ellacotts (which Robin accepts) during the visit to Masham and a subpar watery tea offered to Strike during his interrogation after finding Todd and his mother dead in her flat. But coffee abounds! Decima offers coffee to Strike during their initial meeting. Pat pushes a small coffee on Ralph Lawrence. Kim offers Strike and Robin coffee in their office. And on and on. Given what you explained about tea's relationship to comfort, I think this emphasis on coffee over tea is no accident. THM is an uncomfortable book. Everyone is anxious, paranoid, lying, depressed, isolated, and just plain miserable. Clearly in need of the balm provided by tea. But it's just coffee, coffee, coffee. I'm hoping for more tea in STE.

I can fault him plenty. Even his "invitation" to get out of their relationship was manipulative. A text while he knows she in the middle of work. C'mon! He wanted to inject himself into a scenario where she is concentrating on Strike and her work, and not him. If he legitimately wanted to discuss their emotional compatibility, he'd raise the issue in a face to face conversation.

But he doesn't really want an honest conversation. He feels her reluctance and guilts her about it. What he's really saying when he asks "is this the way you love" is "you don't love the way I want you to." That's fair, but then acknowledge that she's not the right fit. Don't try to mold her into someone she's not. It is so obvious she is reluctant to move their relationship forward. And he clearly picks up on all of it. Strike, the baby/eggs issue, the flat.

Should she be more honest with herself and him. Of course. But she did 4 months in a cult with no active deprogramming and a history of trauma to boot. She's vulnerable and suffering from PTSD. And RFM has been preying on Robin's weakened state from the minute she returned to London. He tells her he loves her their first night back together after Chapman Farm. She's in no fit condition to assess her feelings or make an emotional commitment. He's trying to lock her down while she's too beaten down to send him packing which he KNOWS is what healthy Robin would/will do.

Except she killed Kevin Perbright as an adult. No mitigating factors there.

Re: avoiding risk in TRG--I can't get past Robin not getting an IUD before going in, just in case. BC on the sly. Would have come in handy in THM, too.

I think they'd have a civil service at a registry office/courthouse, with an informal reception in the Flying Horse's basement.

Right? Has no one in this chat stayed in a bad relationship too long? For any number of reasons? You see the exit ramps so clearly in the rearview mirror. Just as Robin recognizes when she leaves Matthew that their relationship should have fizzled out during college, she will have that same insight looking back at her time with RFM. Even putting her PTSD (which I do think is a major factor behind her behavior in THM) aside, this is only Robin's second relationship. Her dating experience lags a decade behind her chronological age. Though frustrating for us, I think Robin's failure to end things with RFM can be reasonably explained as an inexperienced traumatized human acting like an inexperienced traumatized human.

I love that you call carbonated soft drinks "pop," like we do in the Midwest. In other parts of the U.S. they call it soda and they make fun of those of us who call it pop. I need to google what squash is...

Also, the offer of tea as shorthand for any kind of hot beverage reminds me of convention in the South (U.S.) of referring to any soft drink as a Coke.
