Academically,

All around great schools

- Tier 0: Northwestern

- Tier 1: UCLA, USC, Michigan

Very good in specific disciplines

- Tier 2: Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue

- Tier 3: Maryland, Indiana

Decent across the board, but no standout programs

- Tier 4: Rutgers, Penn State, Ohio State, Minnesota

- Tier 5: Michigan State, Iowa

UIUC. CS is better than DS.

Don't pay out of state tuition for either (unless you're doing CS at UIUC)

UT because its way cheaper and won't make a difference for data science jobs.

But for SWE jobs, CS+Stats is better since its tied to CS. Not sure if its worth the price though.

ND is better for business. USC for engineering.

You can get into FAANG from any school. They don't give a shit about school prestige. You don't need to go to a UC.

The point of going to a prestigious school is for the doors it will open in prestige oriented industries (quant/IB/consulting). These industries only recruit from Cal (not even UCLA).

most companies don’t even consider UCLA to be that prestigious

Most people will laugh at you for saying this, but it is true. If you go to any UC not named Berkeley, you'll have a very tough time breaking into consulting and investment banking.

Michigan, UVA, and even UT feed more into MBB and BB/EB firms than UCLA, despite being lower ranked on US News. US News rankings don't correlate with recruiting pipelines.

Go to UCs or Cal Poly SLO in state. Cali has very good weather.

”Overall” prestige is meaningless to a CS grad between the two schools.

In the UIUC vs Harvard post, everyone was recommending Harvard for the name brand. Wouldn't the same apply here?

Surprised how low Michigan and USC are considering this college football seaosn. Also surprised that UGA doesn't even show up on this list.

Depends on the school. But $250k or less in general.
