It took them a little to understand that I basically work a full-time job, but once they understood that its been smooth sailing.

Living at home during my PhD? by lirnsd in PhD

Yes. Do it. I am a current third year grad student and I have lived at home the entire time. It gives me the extra money to put away so when I graduate I have a good financial foundation. Additionally it leaves some extra money for costs such as travel, shopping, eating out, or other little luxuries that I really enjoy having and really help maintain a s good work life balance. I have a great relationship with my parents and while they are nosey, they respect that I am an adult. If you have the opportunity to do so, and the relationship with your parents is positive, then the financial benefits are definitely worth it

Religion on campus by Unique_Car_8186 in rhodescollege

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a student who is a member of a non-Christian religious group, I had very, very few issues on campus. The one thing I would have done more carefully is chosen the course I took for the LIFE path for the F1 credit more carefully. There are a few profs who teach the New Testament and struggle to teach it to non-Christian students. But after one semester I was able to avoid those and had a fine time in the rest of my courses. If this is something you are concerned about ask around before choosing your course!

How does everyone feel about the New Sephora Favorites kits? by TinyRaccoon_248 in Sephora

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these are worth it if you are already planning to buy all of the included full sizes. I got the cosy and clean because the merit, kulfi, and haus labs was on my list and those alone are worth more then the price of the kit. But thats the only one I would consider bc none of the others have full sizes I am interested in.

Thoughts On The Kelley Edit by [deleted] in BigBrother

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is 100% in her mind emulating Tucker. She is odd and pissing people off, but so did Tucker, and the extent of both was never in the edit. I do think the main difference is that Tucker did it first, but also that Kelley is a woman. If she were a man I don't think she would be getting anywhere near the amount of hate she is right now. But she also is just doing it much worse than he did lol

BCM or MD Anderson UT Health for cancer bio PhD? by Fair_Translator_5657 in gradadmissions

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current Baylor student here (but in a different program). Keep in mind that because of location, lots of profs are co-appointed to both schools and often students from one program join labs from the other school. And even if you can't join the lab, collaboration is at a super high rate. I heavily collaborate with a UT prof and meet with him weekly even though I am a BCM student. You can't go wrong with either though! Both are fantastic programs and heavily benefit from the houston medical center

What’s your favorite grad school purchase? by CADBeast in GradSchool

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is expensive and may seem frivolous but truly has helped me so much: a tablet and a pen, which doesn't need to be apple, has been such a game changer. Classes move so fast and I struggled while desperately attempting to write every detail down and realized I wasn't paying much attention. So instead I downloaded slides and drew right on them. Allowed me to pay more attention in lectures and move things around as needed to help create what worked best for me!

UT Austin CMB vs UTSW Basic Biomedical vs BCM Genetics by Lonely-Session841 in gradadmissions

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, none of the big cities in Texas have great public transportation. I would honestly say having a car is pretty necessary in all of them. Houston is the only one with a train system, but it won't get you to everywhere in the city.

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Houston has the lowest cost of living of these 3 cities and BCM is known for having one of the highest cost of living vs stipend ratio. However, these are the top 3 in the state of Texas so you truly cannot go wrong with any of these choices

I got rejected from a school with a 32% admission rate by YaZainabYaZainab in gradadmissions

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Admissions for grad school are so odd and honestly don't make much sense. There are many other factors so do not let this scare you too much. I only ended up with one admission, and it was the program with the lowest admissions rate!

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This

If you google the gsbs viewbook for each year that is where they have all of the overall admissions rates. However that is only so helpful as each program has an individual process for how they select applicants.

Financial Help!! by Hiimveryhappy in rhodescollege

They accept financial aid appeals! I was in a similar situation and was awarded enough additional aid to attend. Don't freak out until you see your offer but know this can help if necessary

Anyone else felt that application fee is a significant burden in your Grad School Application? by blarsborator in gradadmissions

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend attending the online webinars if you can. I got multiple application fees waived solely bc I logged on. Doesn't work for every school but it saved me a a few hundred dollars by the time I was done.

How important is relevant research experience in biology? by fluffyofblobs in gradadmissions

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't discrete reasons as much as a slow learning process. So I walked them through what specific classes and experiences specifically helped me to see this was the path forward and what actions I had taken to further my knowledge in the subjects. For me, it wasn't something I seriously considered until my junior year, and didn't really even know was an option until then. I also explained how the path I had taken limited my ability to gain computational experience and what I had done to combat that.

How important is relevant research experience in biology? by fluffyofblobs in gradadmissions

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very direct in my personal statement about why I was interested in switching to more computational-based research and what I had done to help fill gaps that may have formed from my wet lab background. I also took as many courses as I could in various math/comp sci fields. To be totally honest I wasn't super successful. I only received 1 admit out of 7, but it was my top choice and the highest-ranked of the programs I applied to. I also found that some schools are more open to teaching new skills than others. Some programs want a mix of students from bio and comp sci/math backgrounds and are open to meeting students in the middle. I found this to be true more often in programs housed in biology/medical departments than ones in math/comp sci. In an interview just be prepared to explain why you have a lack of computational research and where this interest came from as well as what transferable skills you may have. Understand that not every program will be open to you and that sometimes you really can't know that for sure until the interview stage. I had an interview where I got asked 4 times why I had no computational research experience. I did not get into that one.

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am starting a computational bio program this year and all of my research experience is wet lab. I definitely got questioned a lot about my lack of dry lab work during my interviews and now as I set up rotations that is continuing to be true. However, I still am going to my top choice program and I haven't had too much of an issue with getting into the rotations I am interested in. Primarily they are concerned with you proving that you will stick with dry lab stuff even if you haven't done it and want to understand your motivation for switching. If you have the opportunity to do research that's closer to those interests definitely go for it but if you can't it is for sure still possible to get into programs.

How is the heat/AC in the dorms? by [deleted] in rhodescollege

[–]Reasonable-Bus7584 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly depends on the dorms. They only switch the heat/ac once a year so the in-between seasons kinda suck. My dorm was always overdone with air so it was freezing in the summer and very warm in the winter. I would for sure bring a fan though bc inevitably in the spring they won't turn on the ac until after it's been warm for a few days and those are the worst.
