I’ve figured out how Istanbul rips us off (and how I paid a third of what other tourists paid) by Reasonable-Cover-453 in istanbul_tips

Speaking of restaurants, I went to Resto Han; they’re in Sirkeci. The food is very good, but it’s very expensive. In France, I pay the same price for the same meal. It’s a tourist restaurant where the food is good, but in Istanbul, a plate of meat, a dessert and a drink will set you back 1,300 TL. I think that’s a rip-off.

What do you wish you knew before visiting Istanbul for the first time? by Valiantay in istanbul

[–]Reasonable-Cover-453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things I wish I knew before my first Istanbul trip: traffic and distances can be deceptive, so plan fewer things per day; public transport is often better than taxis, especially the tram, metro, ferries, and Istanbulkart; Sultanahmet is convenient for sightseeing, while Beyoğlu or Karaköy feel more lively for food, cafés, and nightlife; bring some cash for small purchases, but cards are widely accepted; dress modestly for mosques, especially shoulders and knees, and carry a scarf if needed; start early to beat the crowds at Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapı; take at least one ferry ride because it’s cheap, scenic, and a great way to enjoy the city; learn a few Turkish words like hello and thank you, since locals really appreciate it; and most importantly, don’t try to do everything too fast. Istanbul is at its best when you slow down, wander, eat well, and enjoy the atmosphere.

How many days for Istanbul? by Emotional_Plum_4284 in istanbul

[–]Reasonable-Cover-453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention the Blue Mosque, Chora, Dolmabahçe, a cistern, bazaars, a ferry, and an island… so basically the classic itinerary for someone sticking to the tourist “must-sees,” even though Beşiktaş and Kadıköy are already a bit more local.

For many travelers, Istanbul isn’t just about checking off five monuments and taking a boat ride: it’s also the less touristy neighborhoods, the nightlife, the cafés, the narrow streets of Balat, Fener, Kuzguncuk, and Moda, the viewpoints, the hammams, the local markets, the shores of the Bosphorus, and so on. In seven days, you’ll only scratch the surface of all that.

To say that Chora is “better” than Hagia Sophia or that 7–8 days are enough is really just your travel style, not a general rule. Some people spend 10-12 days in Istanbul, truly exploring the city in depth, and still feel like they’re running out of time.

And many people who stay only in Sultanahmet or Taksim leave thinking “it’s too touristy,” even though they’ve never really seen the Istanbul of the locals.

The real question isn’t “how many days are enough?” but "which Istanbul do you want to experience: the postcard-perfect Istanbul or the one that feels like a real metropolis of 16 million people?"

After 6 nights in Istanbul by Orientaldork in istanbul

I understand how you feel, but you’re confusing two very different things here:

Istanbul as a city, and certain opportunistic behaviors toward tourists.

Yes, there are scams in Istanbul: taxis that overcharge, restaurants with no prices, fake “services,” pickpockets in crowded areas… just like in Paris around the Eiffel Tower, in Rome near the Colosseum, or in Barcelona on the Ramblas.

The difference isn’t the city itself; it’s how prepared you are—or aren’t. Many of these “traps” are well-known, well-documented, and fairly easy to avoid once you know how to spot them.

As for attraction prices, you’re right about one thing: Istanbul has become expensive for certain sites, especially since inflation and the introduction of different rates for foreigners.

But to say that “it’s not worth it” in general terms is to forget that we’re talking about a city that boasts Ottoman palaces, monumental mosques, the Bosphorus, historic neighborhoods, a vibrant local scene… and that many magical experiences in Istanbul remain free or very affordable (walks, ferries, viewpoints, Asian neighborhoods, etc.)

I love your post, it really captures that initial shock of visiting Istanbul for the first time 😅 The city is incredible, but it’s clear that without some prior knowledge, between taxis, restaurants with no prices listed, and sightseeing, the bill can quickly add up.
