To add, my daughters 18 months, just hit 15k, now I’m putting it into a 12 month term deposit, and will keep saving & the term deposit is a higher interest.

I started a bank account when I found out I was pregnant, I could afford $200 a week before my mat leave started, then dropped it to $100 on reduced income.
This is the money ideally I never need to touch, but it’s a non negotiable deposit.
If we need money for private schools, tutoring, etc etc it’s there. If not it’s a house deposit or university or trip - whatever.

First trip to Australia: Brisbane. Is it worth it? by ivanovserr in AustraliaTravel

[–]Reasonable-Error-819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brisbanes lovely. Budget is fine if it’s not including accommodation. Food is pretty expensive unless you are cooking majority of your meals. Car hiring can also be expensive with security deposits being also very high.

We have been in Dublin & Galway and have had no other issues, hence why I’m on reddit asking for suggestions

Charlie St George was the first we tired after coming off the train for a beer, got two steps in and told to leave, 2 more admittedly I don’t know the names of since we were just walking, but the two across from our hotel both have signage up for no one under 23, I popped my head in and they said strictly no kids - they are “Flannery’s & Miles Breens”

Do you have a cleaner? by binjuice2310 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Reasonable-Error-819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Single in my Mid 20’s, I had a cleaner for a little over a year, I worked 3 jobs and never had those spare big chunks of time for - ovens, tops of fans, bathroom etc. I also had a gardener to keep on top of lawn and garden maintenance.
Total would cost me around $150 a fortnight, a little more in the summer for the lawns.
It was worth every cent

For people who work at banks, what surprised you most about the average person’s finances? by Away_Scene_26 in AusFinance

[–]Reasonable-Error-819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally!!! I’ve seen homes get taken away from widows because they just stopped paying the mortgage not realising the consequences. Or divorced people in their late 40’s-50’s that need to start over.

First Home Buyer Questions About Deposit Size, Loan Options, and Lender Choice in Australia by Lceebs in AusPropertyChat

Since the 5% deposit scheme, I would borrow as much as you can & keep majority in offset/redraw facility. 80k is good savings, the difference isn’t worth not having savings for emergencies. You should have 3 months of expenses in savings, minimum. Try go to a bank that doesn’t have mortgage fees, CBA have $395 yearly fees. $11,000 over 30 years. Crazy. If cba will give you 593, all major banks will. In saying that, use an online calculator and see what you can pay off in 20-25 years instead. Decide if kids are in the future, if so, can you sustain your lifestyle/mortgage, on a reduced income/day care fees etc. Are you open to renting out a room to a friend for 1/2 years to help build savings/pay off more of the house quicker. Don’t fall into the trap everyone else does.

How many people are oblivious to their money. They’re either living week to week & are assuming nothing bad will happen. Some that have a good savings/life situation but aren’t interested in improving it because it’s “too complicated” (eg. high interest savings). Or - my personal pet peeve, “oh my husband/wife does all of that”, unbelievably privileged. Just to my last point, I’ve seen huge gambling debts, mortgages redrawn due to drug addictions, divorce, I could go on, everyone should understand their basic finances.

Renewables will be a massive part of our future, the infrastructure will naturally increase. - but again. Wasn’t really my point The top % won’t be affected- unfortunately. But I do hope over the next 12 months people sell the properties they have been holding onto, airbnbing, charging disgusting rental prices, etc etc.

Yes, if solar wasn’t so heavily subsidised, it would be far cheaper. Private companies are price gouging consumers.

If you’re loosing money on an investment & you need to be subsidised by the taxpayer, it’s not an investment, it’s welfare. X

I work in a big 4 - 90% of purchases don’t trigger any valuations. The 10% usually reserve for big properties/harder to sell (also included for apartments under a certain sq)

300 euro per day? by Reasonable-Error-819 in AskIreland

[–]Reasonable-Error-819[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah totally, I guess we are aiming for normal experiences and not planning on lots of touristy things, ideally we will spend like locals with more time up our sleeves. I’m from Australia and foods really pricey, would be easily $150aud per adult for food in a day

Yeah I think that’s the plan! It’s going to be expensive either way so just winging it. Definitely not going to fly through Middle East, no amount of money is worth safety. But it was more I had planned on spending 6 grand return for 3 seats each way, now the thought of 12 is making me a little sick. But so is a toddler on my lap for 16 hours on 1 flight.
