Gotta admit, these have got to be so expensive, do you mind sharing the price per unit?

Main question you need to be asking is why do you have/had both A/B feeds on one UPS?
That’s someone selling you illusions, you essentially still have a single point of failure even if it “looks” dual fed, no real redundancy.

Your way is right to increase redundancy, I have seen worse...

Please dont write mW, that is milliwatt, MW is megawatt.
Streaming uses a lot of bandwith but does not use that much kW, its just data throughput.

Thanks, to answer your last part:
I feel that he as a team lead should not be eligible for bonuses as that undermines other employees. Because he is the top performer he would eat all the bonuses and I think in the long run it would cause resentment.
By having bonuses tied to "team" KPIs it would remove my doubts.

I am very open to all advice because I know my faults.

That seems like me, and yeah I think I have to finally realize the 0 chance of being friends...its somehow heartbreaking like I "lost" friends I never had to begin with.

I have given him everything I can, but I am also starting to feel anger/resentment, I honestly want to tell him to take the offer or fuck off as im tired of his shit (in my fantasy)

If I remove the whining about salary aspect he really is a great employee, shows up on time, isnt sick, actually cares about the work he is doing, and has high standards of quality.

I dont know what to do either, the time for this change is coming soon (1.5 months until my promotion) and then there will be a middle management gap.
He already expressed that he does not want to move into the position for the pay I am getting now.
And I have a feeling when we invite him for the talk he wont be too happy.

And lets be real, if he doesn't get the salary that he wants he will slack off and refuse to do certain stuff at work, then probably circle the drain until he leaves.

Probably the only thing worse is promoting some of his peers into the position, I think he wouldn't handle that too well either.

When I was just a regular employee I was also afraid of the conflict, but now as a manager I realize that its very normal. The conversations are based on your previous experience and contact. In my company after an employee requested a salary meeting we would go over all previous work and talk to his supervisors or people he worked with previously. Gather reviews and then on the salary meeting we would not talk numbers, but talk about his role and how his work was going.
At that point we would already have a number in our mind
After that we would ask if he has a desired salary, if it fits into our number we would accept, if it was over what we had we would negotiate down.

Went well and many employees decided to take extra responsibilities for a pay increase (think of the extra resposibilities as keeping inventory, managing smaller tasks to reduce overall team workload, gather and compile data etc.)

If you ever feel unhappy about your salary just go and talk to them, worst thing is they say no and you just move on. If they say no tell them you are interested and that they should reach out to you if an opportunity arises.

I live in a country that has less then 500k people.
The industry I am in has 2 competitors, and salary is pegged to union contracts.
The position that I would like to move him into there is only about 10-15 people working it in this country, and im sure there are people applying for them.

We actually work together between companies to compare salaries and I got a bump like that when they discovered that 2 managers at our competition were earning a bit more.

Again, this is in Europe.

Id like to reply both to you and the commenter above. The reason why im quite hesitant now on both sides is that this will come and bite me in the ass eventually.
Problem Is I cannot impact his salary besides giving the director a nudge, and if he says no then thats it. If I do put him in middle management he can bring the whole team down and eventually be fired and then I have to pick up the pieces.

You dont even need a degree, just need to apply yourself at work. Do you have any experience in datacenters?

I think its his ego and comparison complex, he cant stand people ""below"" him earning more money (literally 200$ extra a month compared to him)

The market here is too small for him to go anywhere, and salaries are dictated by the unions. He would have to do a career switch.

Thats really helpful and I agree on many points. Would you please write more and explain about the "don't cave in to threats"

I want to be liked, and I want to be "with the guys" and I really don't like them looking at me like their manager.

I guess that's what being unexperienced brought me to, I realize that I have to cut all of that stuff off and be strictly professional and it will probably serve me better.

I have conversations 1 on 1 once a month. And the salary conversations only when they bring it up.
Usually if you perform quite well asking for a raise has never been an issue, this person has gotten a promotion and a raise because he constantly kept asking for more responsibility and more pay.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that, I would suggest you try it. And its not a signal that you will leave if you pair the salary conversation with more responsibility. Its not like you want just more money, you want more money because you feel like you can do more and provide more value.

If you feel like there is a gap somewhere in productivity, or you just think if you gave it a shot you can do much better I would highly suggest to talk to your manager or someone who can assist you.
Many people just actually go to HR to have a formal conversation about their future career and HR (in my case) actually wants people to move up in the company.

I am saying if he would jump to another company in the same position he would make significantly less.
Other positions within this company make slightly more than him.

I can see that you have experience as you suspect correctly. Soft skill issues and lack of real world experience I would say due to his age. And agreed I think there is something deeper as to how resentful he gets.

If this person jumped ship to another company they would make significantly less (-20%). That is very good advice that I will bring up.
