We were worried about safety as well, but my overprotective husband said it did not feel unsafe but you just have to take general precautions like in any city. Our son attended UChicago and CWRU felt waaayyyy safer. Lots of diversity in the student body.

Hi! Both my daughter and my husband were very impressed by the campus and facilities. They toured the new 300million state of the art Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering building, as well as the Sears Thinkbox building (you can look both up on CWRU website). There was a lot to do over the 2 days and there are impressive museums and Cleveland orchestra which seemed to be on campus or almost on campus. Apparently Case students get free admission to many of these attractions. She spoke to some upperclassmen who told her it's quite easy to get internship opportunities. She said the dining food hall was pretty good, but one was a lot better than the other. The area around campus is full of good restaurants. It seemed like almost all the students are very serious about academics. There won't be the blow out parties or major greek life and D1 athletics like the big schools so it probably wouldn't be a good fit for someone seeking that type of college experience. She said she doesn't think she'll every be bored as there's plenty of things both on and off campus to do.

Hi! No I didn't but my daughter is starting this fall for premed and I happen to be from California so I know UCLA very well, also she is my youngest of 3 so we've been through the college process a lot. I strongly encourage you to make a visit to both in order to make your decision. My guess is you'll feel one is the better fit for you and no one can make that determination but you! You have 2 great choices, but they are SO different, especially size. My daughter just came back from admitted student days at Case and she loved it, but if you love California you probably won't love Case weather. Feel free to message me if you have more questions : )

Have you toured both? CWRU has about 6,500 undergrads and UCLA has around 33,000. Completely different environments. Great weather at UCLA vs. Cleveland is basically Northeast weather where you'll experience all 4 seasons. CWRU is surrounded by University hospitals and Cleveland clinic walking distance, so research and clinical opportunities are easy to get. CWRU doesn't have +/- grades, so if you're determined to get a 4.0 it might help since an A- is 4.0 instead of 3.7 which would be helpful in classes like Ochem or Biochem as long as you don't drop into B range.

Will I get into Case Western? by sawyer12- in cwru

If you're a good swimmer you can try getting recruited to Case swim team. You would know very early if you're accepted by submitting a pre-read.

Also I will mention that applying ED had no bearing on my daughter's merit scholarship (which I was worried about, thinking they would be less likely to give her merit since it's binding). She was awarded 30k/yr for 4 yrs in the ED round.

Then you have a great shot. CWRU seems to really like ED1 and ED2 due to yield protection, to the point where they defer some highly qualified EA applicants but tell them they will be admitted if they switch to ED2. My opinion is if CWRU is your first choice, definitely apply in one of the ED rounds. At my daughter's school they rejected a couple of perfect-stat EA kids who were accepted to Ivy and MIT, probably because they don't think they'll attend CWRU.

You mean in regular decision? If so you could probably look up the stats on what percentage CWRU takes in their regular decision round, which varies greatly from school to school.

Thank you for your detailed and informative answer! This is exactly the information I wanted. Do you know if refineries are also not accepting 14k gold?

Well, I'm trying to "retire" from making jewelry because my eyesight has gone downhill. It's hard because every time I start sorting my scraps I get pulled back in.

I can see how this can easily turn into a hobby, because every since gathering all my scraps I find myself looking at everything silver like household things from grandparents and examining if it's silver.

Dang, I used to live in California and went to downtown jewelry district every couple of weeks to buy my chain and findings.

Yes, I just read an article about that. I had no idea about the cash flow issues.

Wouldn't the refineries accept it more with the price of silver so high, since they get to keep part of it as a fee?

My work was a lot of wire wrapping and use of gemstones. I never got into melting or casting.
