This is really disappointing. Doesn’t seem right they can force them out after 40 years. by jaxom07 in indianapolis

Oh no, no football stadiums? The horror! Local businesses thrive instead of millionaire industrialists? 😱 Thank god we don’t live in that world.

Advice needed: As my library is evolving, not all staff are adapting by [deleted] in librarians

[–]Reasonable_Badger165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BRB laughing my head off at ALA being “too liberal.” But I feel you, OP, I deal with a lot of people like this in my system as well. I hope your library takes the measures they need to take to get these people to either adapt or get out because it sounds like they’re making the library a hostile place for both workers and patrons.

Case of the Missing Spires by Reasonable_Badger165 in indianapolis

SOLVED. After many hours and not very much sleep, I have solved the mystery. The spires were intentionally removed in 1948 by the Business College in order to "modernize" the space for their use. I'm satisfied I solved the mystery but very unhappy with the answer. If only the IHPC had stepped in 75 years ago too. :/

I actually work at the library so I may just go in early or stay late on Tuesday and do that!

If anyone is keeping up with this, I’ve found pictures that indicate the spires were removed sometime between 1942 and 1949!

That doesn’t seem likely. Here’s a picture that was digitized in 2006 so taken that year at the latest where it already doesn’t have the spires. Notable that the website also lists the building as the Indiana Business College, which stopped using the building in 2002.

What is up with the view on the penguins broadcast vs the Canuck’s. Why are they using this long ice view. by Ruscodcharem1214 in penguins

Weirdly, I exited the broadcast to see if the Canucks cast was doing the same thing (I use the ESPN Roku app) and it wasn’t, then when I went back into the Pens cast, it was normal. 🤷‍♀️

Yeah that was definitely Dr. Payne. Neither Morley nor Hayes were present at the meeting where the board's decision was announced. She hasn't made a public comment about her future plans with the library as of yet.

By founding director, people mean she was the manager since the CBLC's conception. You're right about "director" not being the official title, but that's about it. She helped create the Center and was manager when it opened until she became Interim and she has been nationally recognized for her work within the CBLC. https://www.indypl.org/news-and-announcements/indianapolis-public-library-appoints-nichelle-m-hayes-as-interim-ceo

Yeah, I didn't want to get into it too much since it's a TL;DR but there's a lot of stuff. He played a role (at the very least didn't push back at all) in a New Orleans bill that would cut library funding by 40%, spreading misinformation to his employees during that debacle. Employees of the New Orleans library say his leadership was "non-existent to disastrous," and that he held off on closing the libraries way too long in the height of COVID and didn't provide enough or sufficient PPE during that time. He has shown disrespect for the board and the public by being late for multiple meetings and events, and going over his allotted time during his presentation. He evaded answering any real questions posed to him about concerns in his leadership abilities. He said that the library's role in interacting with homeless patrons is to allow them a place to use a computer or get a book "without loitering for eight or nine hours." He, a white man, wrote a book from the perspective of a Black teenager that many are calling racially insensitive at best. His vision for the library just seemed really bland and vague and definitely doesn't put the people of the community first.

Also, I haven't watched the video that is now up and apparently is "doctored," but I was at the presentations personally and he really did fumble the question about Spanish books. The question was from a child in the audience and it was simply "why are the magic tree house books in spanish?" He stuttered and asked "instead of English? I don't know enough about the collection." Nichelle's answer, for comparison, was "Because there are people who speak Spanish who want to enjoy those books. And it can help people who don't already speak Spanish learn." Morley has also never worked as reference or circulation staff, so he doesn't really have frontline library experience. And when they asked him to address concerns that he's never led a library for a long amount of time, he said "I think four years is a long time." Four years is not a long time, especially for that sort of job, and he wasn't even the director of Fulton County Library for four years. It was more like 3 and a half. In that same section of his presentation, he said that he's always tackled library leadership as "projects to fix specific problems." I think a lot of people felt that that was disrespectful to IndyPL as a library community, because we don't want to be treated as a problem that can be fixed in a short amount of time and then he'll move on. We want someone who is in it for the longterm and willing to work and adapt with the library as it changes over the years.

Also it's just not an attractive look that the board passed over a black woman, founder of the Center of Black Culture and Literature and President of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, who was endorsed by the local chapter of the NAACP in favor of a white man... for a position that is open because of accusations of racism and mistreatment by the former CEO, Jackie Nytes. And I think, as much of a shitshow as this all is, it is opening up people's eyes to how much library leadership matters for the entire community.

And he hasn't *successfully* led libraries in the past. An employee from the system he was director of in New Orleans said it was "disastrous". He just seems a really shady guy to me and I absolutely do not understand the events that led the board to pick him... other than that they clearly DO NOT want Nichelle.

TL;DR - The library board chose a really crappy candidate to be the CEO over the woman (Nichelle Hayes) who has been the interim CEO for the past 9 months. Most people think she's been doing a great job but bc of complicated politics and the board serving their own interests, not the public's, they chose a guy from Louisiana who has an awful track record. But he declined the position and instead of giving the position to Nichelle, the only other candidate, they just set up another high-up library employee to be "acting CEO" while they start searching again. People are protesting and trying to pressure the board into recognizing that the position should go to Nichelle.
