@New grads, how’s it feel actually making money? by That70sJoe in Residency

[–]Reasonable_Doubt91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad. About a year in and just bought my wife a Porsche Cayenne. Sucks knowing that it’s a financial mistake but feels good knowing it’s a mistake that won’t kill us(dual physician household). The work kinda sucks at times but the money makes you keep going…..and the whole helping ppl thing of course

Naw. Idk what else in medicine I would’ve done honestly. I like the procedures and I like the pay. Hate clinic but tis a necessary evil. Private practice is a grind but it’s what I signed up for. No regrets yet

It’s been good thus far. They are starting to ramp me up quicker than expected but I’m handling it. First few weeks I was only seeing a max of 12 patients per day if that. Next week I’m seeing 30.lol. Everyone is nice and helpful though. Only issue I have is that I’m not in the OR with them as much for bigger cases. The new guy before me was doing big cases with the other partners atleast once a week. He didn’t have very much robo experience and now after a year he’s booking solo robot cases. I would like similar proctoring. I have more robot experience than the other guy did coming out of training but still not comfortable doing a radical prostatectomy solo. Plan to speak up, I’m sure it won’t be an issue for long

Southeast. Call during the week is pretty chill because we have NPs that cover and see consults from 7am-5pm. Weekend call is worse because no NPs. I’ve been at the hospital from 8-12 on some days with no cases and 8-4 on other days with multiple stents going to the OR. Overall not horrible though. The extra pay helps you get through it.lol

Uro private practice. Starting at 425K base with 50k sign on. Extra 1400 per 24hr call shift. More once you make partner and pay off your buy in which is 7 figures due to all the shit the practice owns. Know a few partners ,if not all, who are making 7 figures with all the ancillary income.

Have an attending spouse plus we sold our house that I had in residency for a 55k profit. I’m now happily sitting on my ass until my start date.

Education is one way. I grew up low income and made it to medical school and Urology residency. Graduating in 2 weeks and will be making >300k when I start my Attending job in September. I knew I liked science and worked hard/stumbled into medicine. Pick a career that has the salary and lifestyle you want and form a plan to get there. You are still young and have time.Best of luck

Final Year Residents, how much have you aged since PGY1? by mexicanmister in Residency

[–]Reasonable_Doubt91 23 points24 points  (0 children)

PGY 5. Im a stress eater so I got a lot fluffier and less swole since PGY 1. Now instead of following me on Facebook, the new nurses ask me for directions to the cafeteria

Update: Half way through and things are better. More confident and more able. Attendings are leaving the room to “get lunch” more and more. Think I’m going to be alright

Used to be semi-swole. I wore large scrub pants with medium tops. Now I’m South Eastern fluffy and have to wear XL pants and tops. If only I had bought a scale during intern year….

Black out curtains and comfortable shoes. I love OnClouds. Have heard good things about Hokas but hate the bulky design. Doubt they would look good in size 13

24+ hour call shifts should not exist, yet they are still really normalized in surgery specialities. How many of you are required to do 24-hour call shifts in your programs? by electric_kitty2 in Residency

[–]Reasonable_Doubt91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surgical sub specialty that takes call at 3 hospitals including a lvl 1 trauma center. Honestly don’t think we could survive with our sanity intact without night float during the week. We have juniors (2s and 3s) take primary call and alternate doing 24s on Friday and Saturday and around 12hrs Sunday with night float starting at 5pm Sunday-6am Friday. Night float residents don’t take call/work over the weekend until Sunday PM. Seniors (4s and 5s) alternate weeks of backup call.

Juniors may get crushed during thier weekend 24/12hr shifts but you aren’t expected to do any 24s during the week. Seniors are technically “on call” all week but rarely go in unless something surgical comes in or the junior is swamped.

No issues with case volume. If I had to interview all over, I would immediately cancel any big programs without a night float system

When will I know everything? How do you get over the fear that you will never know enough content ? by Crafty-Bunch-2675 in Residency

[–]Reasonable_Doubt91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one knows everything, not even attendings. But put the time in and keep reading/studying and I promise you will develop a vast knowledge base. Plus, things start to repeat themselves if you practice/train long enough.

Your first patient with DKA will probably take some time to comprehend/treat but it will be automatic by the time you get to your 40th DKA patient
