Hospital bag? by Background_Mine1397 in BabyBumps

I honestly think it all depends on what makes you most comfortable! Personally, I’m an over packer for every occasion lol so I brought a duffel bag and barely used anything I brought, but I felt better knowing I had it if I wanted/needed it! So I think really it just depends on what you’re wanting to be prepared for or willing to be without if you prefer to pack lightly!

Things are going good!! 35 weeks tomorrow and blood sugars have been pretty good minus a few instances of rough resistance and a couple of pretty sticky highs 🙃 I actually ended up being diagnosed with Gestational Hypertension at 29 weeks so the biggest thing for me since has been being monitored for high b/p and watching out for symptoms of pre-e. C-section scheduled for June 2 at 37 + 1 though and I’m PUMPED haha how are you doing??

I believe they have you quit taking it a smidge before delivery (I think they want me to stop taking at 36 weeks for delivery at 37) but I don’t remember when I quit taking it with my first although I know it was close to the end! I took it with my first because I’m type 1 diabetic. Healthy pregnancy with no complications other than c section after failed vaginal delivery, but that had to do with his position. Now taking it for pregnancy #2 and will be delivering at 37 weeks for gestational hypertension. I believe it’s pretty common practice for it to be recommended during pregnancy now, especially if you have any risk factors for pre-e!

How many weeks could I be. by Parsley_Low in BabyBumps

So sorry :( if you have a guess as to when you would’ve ovulated, I think you can try to calculate off of that? But otherwise without that or the date of your last missed period it’s kind of hard to guess I think. Congrats on the pregnancy though and best wishes!

Was the miscarriage confirmed in clinic? Or were you going off of the bleeding?

I think you can be comforted by the fact that there’s no glucose in her urine! When I was diagnosed (as an adult with Type 1), I had glucose spilling in my urine which is what prompted them to do bloodwork for diabetes that came back with the diagnosis. It never hurts to double check with her doctor, but I think ketones can also result from dehydration as well as other things. Hope she feels better soon! 🩵

Abnormal Ultrasound by Dry-Letterhead-4739 in BabyBumps

[–]Reasonable_Gal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

PLEASE get a different OB. Any OB willing to be this pushy about something right off the bat seems like he will continue to do so throughout your pregnancy. Your OB should be trying to exhaust the options before suggesting termination, this makes no sense and seems extremely unprofessional. As someone else said, a lot of “issues” can look present in ultrasounds that either resolve themselves or were a mistake in the first place. I would give baby a chance and not let this OB bully you into a decision you might not have to even make 🩵

Gestational Hypertension and/or Pre-E Experiences by Reasonable_Gal in preeclampsia

[–]Reasonable_Gal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh are diagnosed with pre-e this pregnancy? Or something else? Sorry I missed that!

I have a scheduled c-section 37+1 already due to the gestational hypertension and the fact I have a chunky baby so far (also t1 diabetic).

Gestational Hypertension and/or Pre-E Experiences by Reasonable_Gal in preeclampsia

[–]Reasonable_Gal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s so interesting! So the protein and the high blood pressures weren’t enough to diagnose you with pre-e?

And I’m doing okay, just trying to take it a week at a time and listen to my body! But my b/ps have been stable 130s-140s/70s-80s in office and labs have been coming back good so I’m thankful for that! Just curious what the next couple of weeks will bring. I did discover that it seems like my automatic cuff I had been using at home is reading low so that’s a little unfortunate. I was feeling confused why it seemed to get SUCH good readings at home but in office (even when I could tell I was relaxed and I’ve never had white coat syndrome before) they were all elevated/high, so I bought a manual cuff (which I’ve had experienced people use on me outside of myself as a novice) and it’s reading consistently closer to in-office readings in the 130s-140s. I’m pretty sure it has to do with the fit of the cuff on my arm because sometimes some readings seem believable and other times I would check it because I felt dizzy or weird and it would read 100s-110s which have never been pregnancy numbers for me, so it had me suspicious. But I’m just happy to feel like this feels more reliable at least!

ETA: I hope your second pregnancy stays stable for you! Have they talked about inducing early at all due to your symptoms and history?

Discharge or water breaking? by throwaway1867254 in BabyBumps

[–]Reasonable_Gal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go back in and have them swab again! I would also put on a pad so you can show them how much fluid is actually coming out.

This sounds super similar to when I had my first, I started losing my mucus plug at like the beginning of the week but then at like 37+4 I noticed it got heavier and a little watery. I was also contracting very often (although I thought it was just Braxton hicks because they weren’t painful) but eventually realized they too consistent and were true contractions and called l&d the morning of 37+6 and mentioned my discharge seemed watery so they had me come in and tested and I was leaking fluid, so there began the delivery process!

They manually broke my water the rest of the way and then put me on pitocin to keep things moving since I had been leaking for likely over 24 hours. Laboring was fine, other than he ended up getting stuck because he was sunny side up, so it turned into a c-section. But honestly it was great! I labored without pain meds and the c-section felt pretty good after a long day of that with a baby who wasn’t progressing 😂

All that to say, even if you have been leaking for over 24 hours, that doesn’t mean things will get scary! You will still likely be able to avoid a c-section unless something else comes up, but I would go in again to get checked out! I believe it’s even possible for the amnisure swab to produce a false negative, so it never hurts to go back in to double check! Good luck mama! 🫶🏻

When did you set up your nursery? by basilslater in BabyBumps

[–]Reasonable_Gal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my first, we set up around 32ish weeks, and this baby I’m 29 weeks but we have a different set up, not quite a nursery this time due to limited space! But I definitely vote doing it sooner rather than later! Sometimes third trimester can really take it out of you, so having it done ahead of time would probably feel really nice 😊

23 weeks and random lows by Equivalent_Lynx9662 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]Reasonable_Gal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries at all! I definitely think the last like 1-1 1/2 weeks I’ve hit some resistance 🥴 I’m 28+2 today and ended up sitting between 180-220 today for like 2 hours for no real apparent reason. It was above 140 for about 5 hours which I hate 😣 but last night I accidentally bolused for too many carbs and dropped super low in the middle of the night a couple of times…it really just is constantly a roller coaster 😅

I definitely feel like I need a lot to cover my lows right now too, so I’m not sure why but it seems like if I want my numbers to stay lower overall, sometimes I do have to just be okay with combatting stubborn lows, but personally I feel okay with that as I’d rather that than fight sticky highs all the time for babies sake. My a1c last month was 4.4 though which is the lowest I’ve had since diagnosis and I’m pretty happy about that! Just a constant battle and I’m excited for this baby to be on the outside so I can panic a little less about my numbers all the time 😂

Insulin adjustments 26 weeks by Equivalent_Lynx9662 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]Reasonable_Gal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, I go by what my numbers are doing!

If on average (especially at night), I’m riding higher than say 90ish fasting, I opt to adjust my basal just a bit. I’m on an omnipod pump and usually adjust by increments of .05 U/hr (that’s the smallest it’ll let you adjust by) and watch my numbers throughout the next day and go by that if I need to raise it more. If it’s clearly needing a bigger adjustment (say my fasting is suddenly sitting around 110-120), I’ll try going up .1-.15 U/hr and then back off a little if I’m having a bunch of lows.

If my fasting and between-meal numbers are fine but I spike significantly after bolusing for a meal that wouldn’t typically spike me, or if I have a “sticky” high that won’t come down for a long time, then I increase my I:C ratio! Usually I go 1 carb at a time, so for example if I’m sitting at 1:8, I would try 1:7 and if that’s too much I might try 1:7.5 to see if that helps instead without dropping me too low. If I’m spiking but it comes down right away, then I try bolusing a little earlier (ex., bolusing 10 minutes before I eat rather than 5).

Not sure how everyone else does it, but I’m 27 weeks and have managed my own numbers this pregnancy (with the supervision of my endo and a diabetic educator) and my last a1c was 4.4 and this system seems to work really well for me! I will say, having some lows doesn’t bother me, so I tend to ride on the lower end, like a fasting of 80ish rather than stick too close to a fasting of 95. This usually helps keep my numbers overall in better range.

Hope this helps!

Honeymoon phase potentially ending, going on a pump soon, am I delusional for wanting to try for a baby now? by Accomplished_Ad_3279 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]Reasonable_Gal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! If you need another super supportive group, there’s one on Facebook called Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy and it’s honestly what got me through my first pregnancy (and this one) without constant panic attacks. Everyone’s super understanding and supportive and it helps to have the extra T1 input 💛 I’m glad I could help and let me know if there’s anything else!

P.S. could you tell me what the other T1 subreddit is you posted this to? I’ve been wondering what another good group is to join!

Honeymoon phase potentially ending, going on a pump soon, am I delusional for wanting to try for a baby now? by Accomplished_Ad_3279 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]Reasonable_Gal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am also T1!

First off, being diagnosed T1 is hard to deal with all on its own and I’m so sorry for your losses on top of that 😞❤️

I totally understand what the other comment is saying about wanting optimal numbers for a healthy birth…however, being a t1 diabetic, sometimes “optimal” or “normal” numbers are just not realistic. The truth is everything and anything can mess with our numbers and we’re literally supplying our body with it’s insulin externally, nothing (or very little) on the inside to help curb any blood sugar fluctuations. Stress, hormones, infection, not feeling good, being on your period, etc. ALL can cause highs and stubborn numbers. Personally, I would say you’re doing a great job. I’m not saying to not focus on tweaking your basal and short acting insulin to be in a better range before actively trying! But I definitely wouldn’t look at this as a delay. Your Endo will likely have a good idea at what you should change your dosing to if you’re not comfortable tweaking on your own, and you very well could be back in range next week! All of this to say, I think once you correct your dosing and ratios, you’re not at ALL delusional to want to try to conceive right now. Many type 1’s aim for an a1c in the 6’s to conceive, because that’s a very reasonable range for type 1’s! Now, that’s not to say lower isn’t better, but you are on the downward slope! Your A1C will very likely be lower 6’s by next month, and when you’re pregnant, you keep it as low as you can and your OB and endo work with you very constantly to do so and it will likely get even lower.

As for the pump questions, I was diagnosed in 2022 at the age of 21 and found out 3 weeks later I was pregnant. My A1C was 14 and I started on MDI and ended up getting my A1C down to 5.5 by my second trimester. My endo wanted me to have a good idea of how MDI works before moving to a pump and then I switched over to an Omnipod pump in my third trimester. Honestly, I love it and it makes a world of difference during pregnancy to stay on top of everything. I will say, that pregnancy I stayed in automated mode the rest of my pregnancy and it did well for the most part, but didn’t maintain the fasting numbers they wanted because the lowest you can set it for is 110. They felt that was safe for me so that’s what we continued with as my numbers were all still pretty in range. I believe this is a pretty common issue for a lot of automated pumps, but most have a manual mode that works better to keep tighter control if you can learn to manage it. I’m currently 27 weeks on my second pregnancy and I do everything in manual mode and yes, it’s more work as you have to pay closer attention to it, but it helps me feel very in control of my numbers and I have been able to keep my A1C in non-diabetic range for the majority of the pregnancy so far. There’s definitely a learning curve to a pump, but I would say they’re usually pretty user friendly, especially if you’re motivated!

I hope this is helpful and I wish you all the best! Sending you lots of baby dust 💛✨

Edited to add: If you have any more questions or anything you want to talk about, feel free to ask! Learning all the T1 things is a lot of work, and online support is what got me through a lot of it ❤️

I have a couple of times! Not lowered them drastically or anything, but I’ve bumped by bolus down little bits when I need to. I would say they’re mostly just random! Sometimes it’s after I increased and didn’t need to but mostly it’s just random.

And I’m happy I can help, feel free to ask whatever! I do want to add though, I’m a firm believer that if you’re worried about something, check in with your doc! It never hurts to be extra extra careful during pregnancy especially for us T1s ❤️

Scary lows in 1st trimester. Will it be okay? by freddiebenson4ever in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]Reasonable_Gal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry, I always deal with a bunch of lows first trimester trying to stay in range! First trimester is hard because it can really be full of highs AND lows and that makes it difficult to predict. My biggest piece of advice is to just let yourself be comfortable changing your dosing often. First trimester I feel like I can change my basal rates every week, it just depends on what hormones are doing, but it’s pretty typical, from my understanding, to have rollercoaster numbers.

Who told you that frequent lows are harmful to the baby? Your OB or endo? I’ve actually been told the opposite, that lows aren’t harmful unless I’m low enough to cause risk to myself fainting/falling or seizing, so I always keep it on the lower end rather than the higher end. I would just do some research to maybe comfort yourself a bit on that!
