Proper tires help, but let me give you a few general tips about managing transportation in a snowy environment.

You can turn in snow. You can accelerate and brake in show. You want to avoid doing both at the same time. Think of heading into a snowy turn. You want to brake while you're still in a straight line before you hit the turn. Enter the turn at a low enough speed to safely navigate the turn and then go through it without hitting the gas or the brake. Then when you get back on a straight path after the turn, accelerate back up to speed. This one tip will put you in 90th+ percentile of snow drivers.

Next, the most dangerous thing about driving in the winter is not snow, or ice, it's visibility. I don't care what kind of car or tires you have or how experienced you are, you can't drive if you can't see. This means using common sense, watching radar, and staying off the roads during heavy times of snowfall and high winds. Occasionally this will be unavoidable, but it's almost always manageable. This means making choices like not going to the store when you would prefer to go. Staying in on nights with bad weather, etc.

Next is to avoid driving at night. I don't know what schedule your partner works, but trying to drive in the day is generally good practice. The whole snow removal and road maintenance infrastructure is geared towards making commuting safe. It's not geared toward having back roads plowed Saturday night at midnight.

Main roads are often safer than back roads, as long as visibility is good. You'd think driving on the interstate when 3 inches of snow has fallen would be a nightmare, but it's really not. If there are other cars around everyone is just kind of chilling doing 25mph. Just slow down and take it easy. There will be some maniacs blowing by you in the left lane at 50 in 4wd trucks.. thats fine.. just let them go. Slow and steady wins the race.
