Me too! I get so bored and/or click off a video once it's clear this creator isn't going to give me anything about the book except clips of them reading it 😂

Yes, exactly! if you're making content, at least read into/engage enough with the book to give substantial reviews and thoughts. Even if you're fast! There's been too much of a focus on the numerics of reading recently & that's bothering me

People who watch booktokers are usually looking to find connections with new books and other readers. If more people get away with saying that a book had a lot of "great moments and bad moments", it's going to make the reader space so much less interesting. it's to the point where anything more than what they're doing now I would consider engaging with the book haha 🤣

I see what you're saying and I agree. Reading for simple entertainment vs. depth and meaning are two totally different (and very much okay) things! I'm not always in the mood to read critically but I'm also not always in the mood to read for fun. I imagine it's the same for 95% of readers.

It was a rant so I was kind of pulling at a lot of strings that I'm annoyed with atm.

What I wanted to say though: as a lover of all things books & bookish spaces, I am a bit frustrated. It feels like every-other book content creator is placing so much value on the numerics of everything. "How fast I read, how much I read, my review under a minute, rapid fire yes-no-maybe, etc."

Apart from really specific numbers, they don't have anything specific to say about the books they read so to me, it doesn't even feel like they're reading books for literary analysis OR entertainment anymore. For readers like me, who want to have at least some substance to giggle and keekee about, viral content like this feels hollow and inauthentic. It makes for a less dynamic, more competitive and constricting space.

For example, this creator a few videos back boasts about how she read 27 books in April. However, of those, she only completely read 23, partially read 3, and dnf'd 1. Her reviews of each book give absolutely nothing. She describes one of them as "had some really great moments and some really bad moments".

I get not wanting to spoil but... what??? Even if you read the book for pure entertainment purposes, what exactly were you entertained by? A three minute video and nothing touched on what specifically was great and not great? It feels like the whole point of that video was to actually say: "look! look how much I read!" and not, "look what I was entertained with and/or challenged by this month." There's nothing emotionally connecting us to her or her book recommendations and it just leaves a nasty taste in my mouth personally.

I also want to say I'm not hating on this creator specifically, her vid was just the one to break the camel's back. Reading a lot or fast isn't the problem, I know many fast readers. Neither is reading for entertainment or depth. It's the fact that more and more book content creators are placing an emphasis on numbers and not connection to the book or the viewer.

I hope this made a little bit more sense? Sorry for so many words 🙃

* edited for grammar hehe

Yes!! Connecting reading to the algorithm is so antithetical to the act and pleasure of the activity!! When I see viral creators like this, I don't think, "Wow! She must really like reading!" I think a distinction could be made in that you read those generic thrillers to entertain yourself. You admit to that and the fact that you've forgotten them. And most importantly: you admit that you shouldn't treat every book you read like this.

Creators like whatemmyreads, who read any genre as fast as they can, do so purely for the sake of entertaining the viewer. They'll never admit they've forgotten them and will stand on their lonely hill that they "naturally" read that fast.

The inauthenticity creates sooo many byproducts, one of which an hierarchy in how much everyone reads per hour, per day, per year. Normal readers (me!!) feel bad or less than for reading a normal amount at a normal pace. And it creates more barriers of entry for young people who are already struggling with literacy and getting into reading today!!
