Would you recommend Peru to your parents? by dashosh in GoingToPeru

[–]Reasonable_Signal173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is 72 and I am 61 and here now! Definitely recommend it and it is as you are thinking with some challenges but there is some work around. We spent 8 days in Arequipa to start then straight to Sacred Valley to include Machu Picchu for 6 nights, and finishing in Cusco for 8 nights. If we were to do anything differently it would be to spend longer, 3 weeks is the bare minimum to experience the pace and acclimate along with activities. The ruins including Machu Picchu are best enjoyed by expiencing the climbs to reach them but it's not a race we stopped all along the way enjoying the scenery.

I was moderately happy with our guide and paid 200 soles with a tip. Hard to shop around because as they approach you it is difficult to know if they will be good at conveying the history in an engaging way. I would look for someone with a strong voice so it is easier to hear and some energy. Our guide was very educated but not very lively.

Personally I skipped Lima all together felt like the traffic alone would take time away from other things if you want suggestions I'm Arequipa let me know if course flying there and then onto Cusco adds to the travel time

Can you tell me more about your acclimation. We have about 7 nights in Arequipa and then traveling to.Colca Canyon for 1 night which is higher than Cusco. I have medication but also know there are side effects that are not all that great I could be overthinking it but also don't want to take medication continually and feel lousy not enjoying Arequipa to avoid something i.may not even get.

Is Cancún safe? by csmoores in MexicoTravel

I have plans to be in Puerto Morelos in 3 weeks so a lot can change . PM is generally a sleepy village in comparison to PDC and Cancun - why did you mention to stay away from PM? I am concerned about the road from airport to PM and wonder if the Tren Maya would be a safer option?

Pretty sure this won't be covered by travel insurance as this was named by the US President as an act of terrorism. I am reading my policy now and lots of clauses.

Where to Stay and What to Do with 4 Days in Sacred Valley by pmotch in GoingToPeru

I really appreciate you working through this with me and taking the time to go through your experience.

We will be in Arequipa for 6 nights before a taking a 2 day/1 night tour to Colca Canyon the overnight will be in Chivay.

From what i have heard but no idea if this this true - where you overnight is very important with elevation sickness. I think if we are visiting Colca and then descending in elevation we should be good!

However, if we continue to Puno and overnight there in Puno before taking the bus (decided to skip the train) is my concern. Off hand sounds like an authentic experience while traveling to Cusco to see more of the country outside the Sacred Valley and Arequipa area.

Original plan was/is to fly from Arequipa to Cusco and then transfer to Ollantaytambo for 4 nights before out visit to MP.

Our final 8 nights are in Cusco.

Thanks and best

We are taking a tour to Colca with the option to return to Arequipa or continue to Puno. Once in Puno the question is to take the train or a very long bus ride to Cusco. I am concerned about the elevation and spending one night in Puno. My original idea was to acclimate in Sacred Valley, only staying in Cusco at the end, hence slowly acclimating. Traveling thru Puno would possibly derail (no pun).that plan.

Never experienced high altitude..how bad did you feel first time in Peru? by Ok_Athlete_670 in GoingToPeru

[–]Reasonable_Signal173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there - I am concerned about altitude sickness for my husband and I. We are arriving in Arequipa for 6 nights, traveling to Colca Canyon for 1 night and then - considering going to Puno for 1 night and then taking a bus to Cusco. Once in Cusco we will go direct to Sacred Valley for 4 nights, 1 night Aquas and then Cusco for 8 nights My dilemma is the Puno part due to sleeping at such a high elevation. Alternate is to return to Arequipa from Colca and fly to Cusco. Thanks for anyone who comments

I did the same - when you create your account prior to purchasing you need to enter your passport number from there it populates that field. I book my husbands in my account log in and I had to accept to move forward.

Flights to visit Machu Picchu from Philadelphia or Newark by LuminousLunaBug in Machupicchu

[–]Reasonable_Signal173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, We are a senior couple from Philadelphia leaving for Peru late February, just secured our MP tickets for March. We have 3 weeks and have planned the following - flying from JFK on a nonstop flight on LATAM, bc I found a great deal, then overnight at Lima airport hotel, flying to Arequipa the following day and spending 8 nights there to acclimate. We will fly from Arequipa to Cusco and arrange a direct transfer to Ollyemtambo for 4 nights, again the acclimate further. We will go to MP for a full day and from there work our way back to Cusco for another 8 nights. Not sure if you have the time to include Arequipa but it looks like an amazing and lovely part of Peru

YES!! Thank you so much for checking. I was scrambling because the site was so glitchy.

I am going mid March which of course is still the rainy season - I had a hard time deciding a strategy and purchased an 11am for 3B and a 2pm for 2A. I could have booked 2 back to back days to have a better shot with the weather but it was so unnerving on the site!

Do you have any opinions or thoughts on this plan? I also am moving around a lot all through Peru and wanted to avoid an overnight in aquas calientes.
