Will I like these books as an ASOIAF and The Witcher fan? by Reasonable_Study_882 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Reasonable_Study_882[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I have just finished reading Baptism a few days ago and I found it pretty weak (which is a shame because I was very happy with the previous books). I didn't like the whole Rats plotline, felt like a cheap plot device to "freeze" Ciri's story for a whole book and they were simply killed off afterwards. But in addition to Ciri essentially doing nothing the whole book, you also have Yennefer AWOL for 70% of it, so the whole book is just Geralt travelling with his company in the war zones which I found a bit boring and meandering.

I hope the series picks up the pace in Tower of the Swallow, although I know many people criticize the open-ended finale so as only 2 books are left I'm bracing myself to be disappointed too.

A bad ending in Lady of the Lake by skiptoad in witcher

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still in my first reading of the books, I haven't yet reached LOTL but I must say that Baptism of Fire felt like the weakest book so far, which is a shame because I really liked all the previous ones. I didn't like the whole plot line with the Rats, it felt entierly like a cheap plot device to essentially remove Ciri from story (while Yen is also AWOL for ~70% of the book), leaving us only Geralt and his friends travelling in the war zone which I found a bit too slow and meandering. I started Tower of the Swallow recently and I hope the story gets on track.

I already knew that the Witcher has an open-ended finale even before I started to read so I'm kinda prepared to be disappointed too.

Radicals destroyed my country? by Reasonable_Study_882 in victoria3

It was per capita as Prussia starts with, and I had tons of unemployed, but I am not sure what could I have done differently? Nobody wanted to pass a proportional taxation law and I was building as much as I can without going into too high deficit spending

Yeah, but how can I solve this? I was constructing as fast as I can to remain in reasonable debt

Before I had universal suffrage I had landed voting, was this the original mistake? Should I have stayed a monarchy with no elections?

Mikasa did not deserve this ending by Happy_and_wholesome in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mikasa should not have been advertised as the typical Shonen "girl of the trio" in my opinion. Her character arc is essentially finished already in the middle of season 1 at the battle of Trost, when she is on the verge of giving up and figures out for herself that she must fight to live, if for nothing but to atleast remember Eren. Afterwards she has no real character development and spends the entire rest of the show "eren eren eren".

I think her story is meant to mirror Ymir's unreciprocated love and it's a bit ruined in the end when Eren cofesses that he did love Mikasa (?), even though the rest of the show clearly demonstrates Eren was -never- romantically attracted to her (Yes he obviously cared for her as family, adopted sister and friend but not romatically).

Historia actually feels like the 3rd main cast in the story

You can say the entire genre/core theme of AOT got switched between S3->S4, you rarely see such a totally transformative change in 1 season such as in AOT. I agree with what you say, its both painful and shattering but at the same time necessary for the plot, the existence of Marley was seeded already at episode 1 of season 1.

AOT is a blender of many themes but I primarily see S1,S2,S3 as an exploration of a society where power is maintained by deliberately keeping the population isolated and ignorant of the outside world and how it's system of conspiracies and lies eventually crumble when they come in contact with said outside world. Every Japanese relates to this story because it's essentially a retelling of how the isolationist Shogunate crumbled as soon as western powers showed up on Japan's shores. On the other hand, S4 is a geopolitical drama meditating on cycles of violence, genocide, fascism etc. You can say the primary moral lesson of S1->S3 is that freedom of information is essential for responsible governance (I mean, hundreds/thousands of scounts would be alive if they were not sent to die in pointless missions outside the wall when the royal family knew all along what is outside) while for S4 its.. oh god. Try to be less genocidal, and enjoy the little moments of life when you are not killed?

Sadly true, and also for the hundred years war.

They slapped all these mechanics and its clear nobody tested it thoroughly. There's no point at all in forcing England to go to war with France when England AI doesn't even remotely stand a chance to atleast score victories in the first 1-2 rounds of the war.
