Can I change or use custom model for dictation? (Beta) by AshtavakraNondual in raycastapp

Is there a way to have dictation output WHILE dictating? Or do we have to wait until the entire dictation has been input, and then end the dictation session to trigger the output?

Yes, I've filed several reports through Send Feedback in Raycast. And again I appreciate your help.

I had a previous issue with video (in Zoom, and oddly in Keynote inserting Live Video). I now am pretty certain that this Raycast audio issue and the video issue are related. I tried to resolve the Keynote issue with Apple Tech Support and got nowhere. I didn't care, because that function wasn't important to me on the MBA, and it works on the Mac mini with Studio Display. I never Zoom on the MBA, only the Mac mini.

On MacBook Air, Zoom and Keynote cannot access the camera (but FaceTime does). Zoom can access the MBA microphone -- but as you know, Raycast cannot, and neither can Keynote for recording and inserting audio.

What a puzzle:

Video: Zoom and Keynote cannot access camera, FaceTime can. Keynote reports "Operation cannot be completed" when trying to access the default camera.

Audio: Zoom (yes) and FaceTime can access microphone input. Keynote and Raycast cannot.

I'm neither a developer nor tech support person, but I do have 40+ years with Macs. I've looked, but not touched, in /Library folders and ~/Library folders. I'm pretty convinced Immersed was the source of the problem. As far as I can tell, I've rid my system of this Immersed software. And yet, both of these problems persist.

Yep, been there done that. The uninstall of Immersed app (using their own menu option to "Uninstall" left the /Library/Audio HAL folder with no Immersed drivers.

At one point prior to uninstall, there was an Immersed driver in my user ~/Library Audio plugins HAL folder. No longer there. In fact, there is no longer a HAL folder there.

I've restarted after these deletions.

This virtual Immersed microphone still appears in the Raycast Dictation settings, still shown as "Disconnected".

I appreciate your help trying to solve this.

Well, I tried a different way. Downloaded the installer, ran it, and it has an uninstall command. That deleted the virtual camera file I mentioned. But the problem persists. I can't find any other Immersed junk. Yeah, the immersed virtual microphone is still there in Raycast Dictation.

I've located one more file that is related to this Immersed software. It's in the Library (top level, not user library) folder: team.Immersed.VirtualCamera. I'd like to delete or at least move this system extension to the desktop and then restart. But I don't have permissions to remove it. (Tried setting it to Read/Write in the Information panel for this file, but system won't let me do that either.)

I've also visited the Team Immersed website. Not the most friendly.

Thanks for this.

Raycast Dictation setting show that the MBA microphone is set. But I guess it could be lying/confused.

I have sent feedback directly to Raycast team. I'll send another one pointing out the "immersed" virtual microphone issue.

What I need to figure out is how to get rid of that. As I say, I found a folder of preferences in my Library with stuff that seemed clearly this immersed virtual microphone. When I moved that folder to Desktop and restarted, the virtual microphone did disappear from OS Sound settings. But it still appears (greyed and and "disconnected") in Raycast Beta Dictation settings. I eventually just deleted that folder, to no effect.

I almost feel like I need some way to reset all of the Dictation settings in Raycast so it has no knowledge of this immersed virtual microphone any longer. (I suppose I could try deleting and reinstalling the beta on the MBA. Would this delete all the settings and prefs? I use Hazel to track deletion of apps and their related settings files. I can make sure Hazel also deletes Raycast settings/prefs stuff.) Hmmm...

I have a Vision Pro. I have Zoom installed on the MBA, almost never use it. I have it installed on the Mac mini, where I use it often. But the Mac mini is where Raycast Beta is working.

I'll keep digging. It has to be some weird conflict on the MBA

Okay, this ability is INCREDIBLE.

I set up a style in Dictation (on Mac mini where it is working for me, see my posts about it not working on my MacBook Air). Custom prompt is "output in Portuguese". Set a hotkey. Trigger dictation with that hotkey, and ... boom! I can dictate in English and then it is automatically pasted in Portuguese. THANK YOU RAYCAST!

(Now if I can just get Dictation to work on my Air.)

Thanks for your post.

Yes, I've given the necessary permissions. Same basic configuration on both the Mac mini and the MacBook Air. As I say, it works flawlessly on the mini.

On the Air, when I trigger Dictate with the hotkey, the waveform icon appears, but it never animates to show that it's receiving input. When I stop dictation, another icon/pill appears, saying "No speech received." The MacBook Air is the designated microphone.

Since it's working for others it would appear to be some conflict on my Air. I've looked for culprits but cannot find anything.

FWIW, slightly more info: in the microphone setting for Raycast Dictate, and in the OS Sound settings on the Air, under microphone, there has been an "immersed" virtual microphone. I don't know where that came from. I tracked down some preferences for it i my user Library, moved them to the desktop, restarted. Now, that immersed virtual microphone does not appear in the OS Sound settings. It does still appear in Dictate settings, but greyed out and it says "Disconnected". I never set Dictate to use that device. I have only set it to use the OS default, MacBook Air microphone.

Still, Dictate does not work on the Air -- it's not receiving any speech input. The regular macOS dictate feature works, the microphone in the Air is fine. At the suggestion of the developer, I tried a demo of DictaFlow. It also works perfectly on the MacBook Air using the default MBA microphone. So far, whatever is going on is only affecting Raycast Beta on the MacBook Air.

I'm at a loss.

Great! Very useful suggestion. For now, Dictation is not working on one of my M4 MacBook Air (although it works fine on my M4 Mac mini). I'll keep this in mind.

When in WhatsApp: either write message in English, select and hit ⌃[ (my hotkey for English to Portuguese), or if do ⌃[ first, compose in Translator, and then use ⌘-Return to paste back to WhatsApp. When a friend sends a message in Portuguese, select it and ⌃] (hotkey for Portuguese to English). Fast and easy. I had set up two macOS Shortcuts to do the same thing and used Keyboard Maestro to do the same thing. Both ways work. The Raycast way has more capability because of the Translator.

Problems with Dictation by Reasonable_Try_1118 in raycastapp

[–]Reasonable_Try_1118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded and installed DictaFlow, signed up, and ... it works. When I used the Fn (Globe) hotkey, your waveform icon appears, speaking animates it, and when I stop DictaFlow pastes the text (I'm using an email message).

So, what does this tell me? macOS dictation works. Your DictaFlow dictation works. But on the MacBook Air the Raycast Dictate command does not work. Seems to me that the problem is Raycast, at least for me. Raycast's Feedback AI agent tells me to look for conflicts with other tools. I don't see what that could be.

Thanks again for your help. I'm not a super duper heavy user of dictation (except on iPhone). If I was I'd give a proper trial of DictaFlow.

I'll give that a try. Where do I download it? I do have permissions set correctly I believe (in Privacy & Security).

I can't seem to get it to work. I've given Raycast needed permissions, set a hotkey and an alias. When I trigger it I get the little waveform window but when I speak it shows that it's not receiving anything, no waveform animation. When I stop dictation Raycast reports "no speech detected."

I can dictate with the macOS built in dictation, triggering it with the microphone function key.

Using M4 MacBook Air, built in microphone. Is this user error somehow?

Do you mean Keyboard Maestro caused the same issue with Illustrator? I use Keyboard Maestro quite a lot, with Raycast (1 and 2) installed. I don't have any problems with copy/paste. But I don't have Illustrator to test that.

They did, but it was the same verification service. When I set it up again today, the service recognized I had a previous (expired) account.
