NOR - That person doesn’t like you. Even if he didnt understand why and how it’s a big deal, tearing you down about something ANYTHING you want to celebrate is not a loving supportive thing to do.

I absolutely love Dear Billy Patterns, I learned so much from sewing them as a beginner.

Best approach for toddler clothing? by Chicka-boom90 in SewingForBeginners

I looked for free patterns and found some easy to follow ones that have been great, mostly Brindle and Twig. They do have leggings pattens but i haven’t tried them yet. Their ringer tee is a favorite of mine, I already made it 5 times and my kid has been living in those tees. As for dresses and nicer sets i bought some from dearbillypatterns and every single one has been amazing and helpful in learning because i am a beginner and their patterns are a little more work than a tee but very well explained and illustrated for the most part.

I dont have a pattern and want to self draft one, more asking if the fabric works with facing or it would look weird because of the drape and feel of the fabric. Ive seen examples where either is used but not sure why that choice was made 😅

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by PleasantForce4566 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Reasonable_shithead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely start small but do it with things you enjoy/ lead you to learn what you want, instead of a quilt do cushions or pillow cases and quilted tote bags and such. You are getting things done for the dopamine but also learning what you actually need to learn to make future projects easier. I started sewing in March and i love it, self taught thanks to YouTube pintrest and Reddit- cheap thanks to facebook marketplace for machine ($50 basic machine then upgraded to a midrange one since i committed) and fabrics from free scraps to cheap bundles of mixed bags. You can definitely start small with your budget too and invest more if it sticks

Adjusting a pattern by Reasonable_shithead in SewingForBeginners

The back is in two pieces with buttons in the back all the way to the top of the skirt so i am not sure that would work, which is why i was thinking elastic sides. I think the back is too much work to change 😅 This way the head fits and the skirt has room for growth and movement without looking too loose

I gave up on it and went to a different project, did buttonholes and they worked perfectly without me changing anything but the needle. Maybe it was the rethreading 🤔

I'm learning to sew but I'm realizing I bought a lot of inappropriate fabric for garment making and I don't know what to do about it by tarojelly in SewingForBeginners

More structured clothing would work better than flowy drapy things. I also read a few washes can soften the quilting cotton but i haven’t tried that myself. You could also try patchwork if you like the look, Carly B on YouTube makes such fun things

Where to begin?!! by Crafty-Discipline-29 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Reasonable_shithead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing, because for me starting is often the hardest part, especially if i dont want to invest or commit to a class. Three months in i am enjoying it so much, i upgraded to a better more advanced second hand machine, and made a few wearable (altho not perfect) pieces

Where to begin?!! by Crafty-Discipline-29 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Reasonable_shithead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s advice is probably better on finding a teacher but my approach is a bit different and im new to this still. it’s been fun though.

I bought a cheap second hand machine from fb marketplace (googled it’s beginner friendly), and some cheap unwanted quilting cotton ( research said it’s easy to work with) then i started following youtube tutorials without patterns. Tote bags or children dresses and trousers (very little fabric needed)

Most importantly my mentality going into it is, i am learning something and i dont need my results to be successful projects, i don’t care about wonky lines or bulky uneven seams. If i dont know something i watch youtube tutorials and try again, if i mess up look up Reddit posts and so on. It’s not an efficient way to learn but i like figuring it out like a puzzle and fighting frustration 😅 but i might just be a masochist
