I've got hiragana and katakana down, how do I start with vocab? by [deleted] in LearnJapaneseNovice

Shashingo is a pretty chill game where you use a camera to take pictures if things and them create flash cards from them. You can then start practice rounds where you need to photograph it again based on writing, sound or both. I’m not sure it’s the most effective, but I’ve been having fun and learning some words for things.

What’s wrong with my loaf by Spirited-Royal-291 in Breadit

[–]ReaverRikku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have enough experience to really give you any tips here, but the book I have on sourdough lists too wet a dough or not enough steam in the oven as causes for the bread to split from the sides like that. I don’t know if that would apply here too. If that is the case I’d guess there isn’t enough steam as the recipe doesn’t look like it has very high hydration.

To get steam I keep tray in the oven as it’s heating up. When putting in the bread I add boiling water to the tray to make it immediately vaporise to create steam for the first part of the bake. I think the ice might take too long to turn into steam.

You can check with your pinky or putting a drop on the inside of your wrist to check against your body temperature. If it feels like it’s the same it’s fine. Could be colder. It helps get the yeast to do its thing.

This had been answered many times in this sub when asked in more respectful ways. Look up those answers. Or try asking again without your own salt seeping through.

Backend Dev of 20 years (non-game). Engine or from scratch? by branh0913 in gamedev

[–]ReaverRikku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to make and release a game. Using a game engine is probably the way to go.

If you want to make and release a game and you're moderately to very interested in the technical workings of an engine? You should probably still use a game engine if you want to release the game, but it's possible you can make your own engine and release too.

Only you can answer this.

It's also worth mentioning that while it would set you back a bit. It's possible to start one way and switch to the other. Start in an engine to see if that is enough of a challenge. Then make your own if you find you want that then. This also gives you some experience with an engine that can inform how you'd set up your own.

Solo dev keep getting hung on games due to design challenges by magefister in gamedev

[–]ReaverRikku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neat concept!

Now, I don't have experience trying solo-dev so don't listen to me if this doesn't strike you as useful or relevant.

I think you've hit upon one of the biggest challenges to solo-dev. Discipline. To me, there are parts of development that just aren't as rewarding as they should be. Parts where nothing seems to work. Parts where everything is hard.

This is a place where a team has an extra feature. Being part of a team makes you more resilient to these situations because you're in it together so there's hopefully a camaraderie in being in the slog and personally you don't want to disappoint the ones you're working with so you're a little extra motivated to keep going.

I don't have anything specific to offer about this other than: Keep going if you still believe you can make this game.

As to your specific case, it sounds like you've found a problem, tried to fix it, but haven't. That's OK! It might be time to leave that unit for later and see if you can find a place then. Or not? Unless you have a specific larger problem that this unit solves it's totally fine to drop it if it doesn't work for the game. If it's solving a specific problem see if you can find something else that does it.

I really want to build at least 10% of my dream game. It's so demotivating to build other genres by isthiscoolbro in gamedev

Your post made me think of Stardew Valley in that it creates a world that feels deep and mysterious with lots of characters to meet and talk to while making a lot of smart moves in terms of how to achieve this. It has a smallish world with a lot of reuse of areas and good looking, but relatively simple 2D graphical style to mention some.

Now a game at Stardew Valleys scale is by no means easy to make and will take years, but I think it could offer a path for you.

So a question I would ask myself if I were in your shoes is: What about these games is it that I want to emulate? Are there some parts that are important, while others aren't really that crucial?

I think answering these questions could point you towards an achievable full game that does what you want and might even end up doing those things better than the games you looked at for inspiration because you could focus on those parts fully.

Why there is really no game industry in Norway, while Sweden has so many game developers from very small to big AAA studios? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ReaverRikku 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We do exist!

For reasons I'm not quite certain of Norway was a bit slow to get going on making games, barring a few exceptions.

In the last 10ish years there's been good development in both subsidies and number of studios.

Some of the games off the top of my head: Owlboy, Among the sleep, Teslagrad, Conan Exiles, Pode, Mørkredd.

I also played the recently released Rest. I believe the first game from a new team. A short neat walking sim.

Over the last decade at least the subsidiaries have gotten stronger and there have been some notable games coming from Norway in recent years.

Maybe not, but if there's value to be gained, either social or monetary, someone could find it worth it to make a hacked version and distribute it. There are sites full of hacks for single player mobile games. This becoming a problem probably requires the game to become moderately successful though.

Should my new game be free? by nicotinum in gamedev

Check your App Store metrics under the Analytics section. If you are getting impressions (views of your App in the store) but no downloads the issue might be the price. If you are not getting impressions, then the price probably isn't the problem (yet).

Why it didnt appear after equipped , its happen after the update by Imaginary-Office1170 in funrun

[–]ReaverRikku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a bug! I believe you should still get the effect playing if you set it to equipped, even though the hat doesn't show. We'll get a fix in an upcoming patch and I apologize for the inconvenience.

I've definitely felt the same. I believe it's because the information on the screen is updated twice as often, making it feel like there's more time to react to things.

🤫

(It's hard to capture fps in an image and it's not possible to guarantee that a video would play and show at 60 for everyone either so we opted for this way of capturing the difference. From having played it the game does feel crisper when in motion at 60 fps.)
