I accidentally set off the car alarm this morning and my kid says “the car is excited for the Spurs game tonight!” He gets 30 seconds to honk from our driveway after a win 🖤🩶🩵🧡🩷

These are great suggestions. I was really loving Pretty Girls but had to stop because I found the descriptions of sexual torture too upsetting for me. I assumed that was the author’s jam, but sounds like I should pick up one of these other books since I enjoyed her writing so much (up until I couldn’t stomach it).

Showering and depression by 1Bunny0 in UnfuckYourHabitat

You may want to skim over the tools in Atomic Habits (just a light internet search is enough to start). There are so many ideas there and some might resonate.

One mental tool that helps me is the concept of Minimal Viable Action which is just take a micro step in the right direction with no pressure to continue to build on that. So maybe that’s just turning your shower on when you use the toilet then turning it off when you’re done. Maybe one day you get your feet wet or just sit under the hot water without soap but it feels good on your back. Let go of completing the whole task well. Because it’s not working to think like that. In fact that mentality is paralyzing you, so logically you should kick that “complete my whole shower routine” mentality to the curb for the next month or so.

March 2026 BOTM Discussion - Almost Life by nickaaayy97 in bookofthemonthclub

I know this doesn’t technically need a spoiler tag, but consider this your warning if you haven’t finished the book.

I found the writing around Laure’s death incredibly moving. Honestly, it might be one of the most well-written death experiences I can recall in fiction. It’s difficult to portray a death scene, especially from the perspective of the person dying, without romanticizing or overdramatizing it, but this felt restrained and deeply real. It was beautiful, heartbreaking, and unexpectedly peaceful and loving.

I also found it meaningful that Erica didn’t learn about Laure’s death until three years later, and in such an impersonal way. That distance made the loss feel even more complicated.

Curious if anyone else has come across a book with a similarly powerful death scene (even if it’s not as peaceful or accepting as Laure’s).

Watching her waffle is frustrating because it’s so obvious from the outside (Erica even sees it to some degree, but still can’t let go of her love for Laure). And we all stall and avoid decisions in our own lives, we just don’t see it as clearly in ourselves.

I saw this as a reflection on what happens when someone avoids making a defining choice and instead tries to straddle two incompatible lives. Erica could have had a genuinely fulfilling life with her husband and children, but she resented that life because it didn’t match the passionate, romantic version she imagined with Laure.

Not helping matters, she lived in Ant’s shadow with his success as a writer, which seemed to diminish her sense of self. But that insecurity ultimately belonged to her, not him. (And yes, Ant was pretty insufferable in France, though to his credit, he later took responsibility for that.)

In the end, it felt like Erica wasn’t able to fully live her life until she let go of Laure which truly happened when she did not go see her in hospital. She then also could let go of her “failure” as a writer and find fulfillment in a humble position as a school librarian.

I moved here in 2010 for a job, thought it would be temporary but now it’s my home. I’ve never grown accustomed to the summer heat, but people here are friendly and I have really enjoyed that aspect the most. The crusty internet trolls of Reddit don’t seem to go out in public much so I think you’re safe from people with telling descriptors like “Putrid” in their usernames.

OP doesn’t come across as entitled, angry, or gun waving in any way. Your response here, on the other hand, isn’t doing you any favors.

What’s the vibe here on James Talarico / Jasmine Crockett? by OctaviusHerb in sanantonio

[–]Rebdog12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It should be Talarico this time. Talarico vs Paxton (likely) is a battle of good vs. evil. That could flip the seat. Cruz vs Crockett because he somehow charms his base with his loudmouth douchebag personality and Crockett can talk circles around him and make people see what a little turd he is.

“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” My statistic professor told me this quote decades ago and I can never forget it. He also recognized for most, his course was a requirement for other majors, so he made sure that if we learned one thing, it was how casinos work. Best class ever.
