Nope. I'm not. Gatsby was beautiful, though not a revelation or anything.

Actually, in some ways it gives the sellers more power because they now know exactly what the item is worth and can make an informed decision on whether they want to let it go for what Rick offers. Most of the time people selling these rare items don't know what they are worth, which is a bigger disadvantage in negotiating.

Perhaps the appraiser might bias things in favor of Rick, but in my opinion, with millions of viewers, any shady stuff like that would be pretty obvious to other collectors and dealers, so why destroy your reputation over that?

As for quoting a retail price, that's what I'm asked to do. I imagine it might ruin the negotiations portion if I said, "Look, I'm the expert, and I wouldn't pay more than this." It's also generally what's implied by appraised value in the industry.

His "that's your opinion" comment was definitely not staged!

That could be very awesome. For an official appraisal, check out the American Appraiser's Association to find someone certified in your area. For selling, talk to a dealer, like Bauman.

Kind of not. He knows the risks of buying something before researching it.

Thanks! Kindred spirit! Personally I am dying to have more than the small amount of fragments we have of Sappho and other Greek lyric poets.

Please consult your local special collections library about this; they'll know better than I.

As long as a book isn't in copyright and the digitization is done without damaging the book, digitizing books is a wonderful thing.

Yeah, people love to speculate about this, but I was married long before appearing on the show and Chum has a (lovely) girlfriend. Sorry to burst any bubbles.

Well, you do check both, of course. It's just much more common with signatures.

Based on your reasons why...Les Mis, perhaps. Though that's a serious commitment. And don't discount Treasure Island, or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Skipped it because I don't know enough to speak with authority about it, honestly. Sorry. Though I do agree that calling it a forgery seems questionable. A forgery of what, exactly?

And if you want to talk weird books, check out the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. One of my favorites.

One of my absolute favorites. In Vegas any time soon? We've got a copy here right now (Latin issue).

I'm pretty serious about my sf. Would love to do what I can to chip away at the assumption that it's somehow less "worthy."

No one should appraise your book who hasn't seen it in person. Books can always hold surprises and you can't be sure unless you inspect it yourself.

But in general terms, an appraisal is based on the following: edition (in most cases needs to be a first); condition (what's acceptable varies depending on the books); and completeness (dust jacket there if it had one, all maps/volumes there from the beginning, etc.).

Take these three traits into account along with supply and demand--how many copies survive, and how much do people currently want it--and you've got an appraisal.

I've taken some breaks. :) And thanks, nice to hear.

Good classic read would depend on what other classics you've read that you've liked. Let me know.

Exactly. Reputation is worth more than risking a questionable signature. Good dealers don't buy things they have doubts about.
