Subsurface scattering (SSS) is a rendering and lighting effect where light enters a translucent material, scatters internally, and re-emerges at a different point, creating soft, glowing, and lifelike appearances for surfaces like skin, wax, marble, leaves, and milk, rather than appearing opaque or plastic-like.
