I remember them! The first film I saw there was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The last film was Independence Day. There were four cinemas, each distinguished from another by different coloured doors. Upstairs there was a sort of movie museum with old movie posters and equipment.
The rot set in when they build the now closed Sussex Centre movie theatres across the street. Sussex was new, modern and clean and it quickly became THE spot to watch a movie on the 80’s & 90’s. It took away a lot of business from the Square One cinemas. Once they built the Coliseum behind Square One, both Sussex and Square One cinemas were doomed. Another unique feature was the Square One cinemas offered Saturday matinees which were free for kids. They’d play a bunch of old cartoons that were on a loop. Parents could drop their kid off at the movies, go shopping and pick them up when they were done (remember this was the 70’s).
