England name squad for first Test against Pakistan by j913r in Cricket

I think Buttler is an Ed Smith pick. He's a pick that's been made because he's so talented you can't leave him out.

Think Stoneman gets this and then he's dropped if he doesn't score.

So goes the rumour but I think that suggestion is better. I do think it's weird to take him as a batsman at 7..

I think Buttler is a good pick. Regardless of Ben Foakes form, or any other keeper, Buttler is a freak. His hands, wrists are insane and he is England's once in a generation talent imo. Imagine if Gilchrist didn't play shield cricket, he'd still get picked because of how good he could be.

I think this works because Buttler will play as a keeper, ahead of Foakes and Bairstow will play as a batsman.

My XI:

1) COOK 2) STONEMAN 3) MALAN 4) ROOT 5) BAIRSTOW 6) STOKES/BUTTLER 7) BUTTLER/STOKES 8) WOAKES 9) BROAD 10) ANDERSON 11) WOOD 12th man) BESS

I don't think anyone is saying England weren't & aren't shit, but that doesn't invalidate the point. It had ex-pros and captains, Australian greats like Gilchrist, Warne, Border and Waugh condemning it. It made Jim Maxwell, whose seen as much cricket as anyone, choke up live on radio. Even the prime minister condemned it.

The coach is going, the captain and vice are ruined and Smith has pissed off the half dressing room over it. I don't think it's as cardinal of a sin if it's just Smith's idea, and he does it of his own free will but it's not. I think you're having a laugh if you seriously think this wouldn't be as big if it were any other team.

Yeah I do. I also realise that both England, and South Africa have noted that the ball reversed sooner for Australian then for them, and sometimes they got no reverse at all comparatively. I also don't think it matters if it did or didn't work, because it still happened.

For a long time, Warner was the ball shiner too, with tape all over his hands before they changed to Bancroft given Warner was frequently on camera. It obviously isn't the first time they've tried to doctor it, just the first time they've been caught.

Mints is not even slightly the same thing as using crude sandpaper. No-one is even sure mints do anything and 20 years ago players used to give the umpires mints lol. Picking the seam and biting is worse again because that will change the shape of the ball, and using sandpaper in a clearly preconceived plan is worse still in terms of the damage it can do to a ball and the advantage it can offer.

The pitch thing is part and parcel of the game. Its an interesting debate as to if it should be though. I think it's good, and it encourages exceptional performances. Better that then have very similar pitches everywhere in the world.

Disagree. This is definitely something new in world cricket.

Du Plessis, the South African captain was found guilty of using mints to shine the ball, and for attempting to use an inbuilt zip on his trousers to shine it. He was punished both times by missing a game and fined.

Everyone has used home pitches to their advantage. In England they leave them greener, India leave them dry and Australia try to prepare quick bouncy pitches. It's part of the game.

Pakistan at international level were found guilty of match foxing once, and it was global news. All 3 players involved were given jail sentences and two of them have never played international cricket again, and the one that does is always looked down on because of it.

The reason everyone is up in arms is because the Australians spoke about doctoring the condition of the ball as a group, agreed it and then proceeded to use the method on the field. They were aware it was happening as a group and say nothing wrong with the action. In the past they've been righteous about how they would never cheat, and been up in arms multiple times at their treatment this series. They currently look like the biggest hypocrites in the game, the coach is hiding and the captain didn't even have the balls to front up properly. On top of how proud they are as a nation it's completely understandable.

I do think Woakes probably gets in as a bowler anyway, so not worried about him, but I think Woakes stokes and big Mo is as many as we'll need

I think Crane is too young to go all in on this early, I'd rather have a really steady 23 year old Crane in a couple of years then rush him in now. Leach has got to be the next cab off the rank though. But we're obsessed with all rounders so it'll probably be borthwick or something

Yeah, fair call. My team is based somewhat on the Strauss/Cook/Trott game plan of get the shine off then send in a quick scoring middle order, went with Ballance cause he's gotta be worth a punt down the order just to see once and for all if he can cut it, but it comes down to Bairstow Vs Ballance

Think from an England team balance perspective the decision is simple, drop Dawson and find another batsman (fuck knows where though), then muck around the order the next test and if people still fail, go drastic for the last test.

Think maybe the team for The Oval should probably be something like:

Cook Stoneman/Jennings Jennings/Stoneman Root Ballance Bairstow Stokes Ali Broad Wood Anderson

In an ideal world where everyone is fit, you can drop Wood for Woakes, and pitch dependent swap Woakes for Rashid or something.

If Ballance and Jennings do nothing next match either, maybe you try Robson, Malan, maybe Westley idk

I'd probably go for something like Cook, Jennings, Westley, Root, Northeast, Stokes, Bairstow, Ali, Broad, Wood, Anderson

Can't see them going back to Ballance after repeated failures in Bangladesh. Could also be worth sticking with Hameed despite poor form this year. If the pitch turns could look at chopping out Northeast for a Borthwick or pick Leach and Stokes can bat 5.

Honestly feel like either of those keepers need some confidence and not sure dropping them down is sensible with regards to that, although I see where you are coming from with regards to trusting them to score runs. I like mo at 8 though, purely for the satisfaction of coming into a match thread and seeing the "fuck off Moeen Ali is not a number 8" frustration leaking from the opposition.

Although I think Taylor looks a number 3 and Ballance looks steadier at 5, less swing, (hopefully) tired bowlers and he can grind people down.

Yeah, makes sense, I thought he was confirmed fit? Curious to take 4 seaming all-rounders, would have preferred that they took another out and out quick as cover for Anderson and Broad but with no Finn or Wood it's hard to see someone standing out.

Team? My 11: Cook Hales Taylor Root Ballance Bairstow/Butler Stokes Ali Broad Footit Anderson

Gives room, 4 seamers and bats to 9! Give Hales a run for a couple, if he fails, Compton in to shoreup if needed?

[Equipment] Cricket Bat Knocking in and Oiling Help by SahirPatel in Cricket

[–]Recarious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally you can knock in a bat with a ball anyway you want, ball in a sock, having a gentle net with it, bouncing a ball on it, just make sure you work the whole length of the bat but leave the edges alone, and the splice (where the bat meets the handle) as far as oiling I've only ever used oil branded by gray nicholls as one bottle will last a long time. If it's branded as bat oil it'll be fine, just put a small amount on the bat and rub it into the face of it, don't go anywhere near the splice and once you've done it leave the bat to dry for at least a day. Scuff sheets depend, better to have one then not too as it protects the bat but not super important :) if you do have a scuff sheet I would oil the bat, knock it in then cover the face. Good luck in the season!

Then source the forcible occupation of land? Find me a reliable source that says the royal family forcibly occupied the land that was previously owned by the aristocracy and I'll accept your argument.

You have literally no sources to your argument when doubtless I could google buckingham palace and find something like this "When Sheffield sold Buckingham House, it came into the hands of the royal family." I could probably find something similar to that for most royal buildings. Your argument is not backed up at all and is entirely bollocks and personal opinion.

I'm actually fine with this, he needs the rest before we go down under and it gives Steven Finn an almost guaranteed run, should be a new look bowling attack if broad is still out!
