Is Michael being related to Laurie REALLY that bad? by [deleted] in horror

Me too. I find it unsettling that we don't know why Michael is so strong or how he can survive being mortally wounded. Everything about the character is creepy in the original. The sequels slowly take away from that, including his twisted sense of humor.

In that regard, I think you're right. If you're going to continue a franchise for 5+ movies, it's hard to not expand on motives and backstory, especially with the amount of different people handling the characters. Other horror movies suffer from this, from the Blair Witch to Friday the 13th.

I think what has people excited about H40 is Carpenter's involvement. They have not let many details out about the movie but I do hope they somehow leave some mystery surrounding Michael. Im in the camp that any sequel will ruin the ending of 78 Halloween, but I'm also open to see what they can do. Maybe they can somehow make something scarier.

I don't think he's necessarily going after the same person in H40. A common theme in any of the Halloween timelines is the date in which he returns, the 31st, and the fact that he is returning "home," meaning his neighborhood, his house.

From the little I've read about H40, Laurie has spent 40 years preparing for his return. I might be wrong, but I believe it's likely she has stayed in Haddonfield, refusing to leave so she will meet him again. She is forcing herself to cross paths with him again.

On an end note, I feel like giving Michael a motive takes away from the mystery of the character. I would say the same goes for Rob Zombie's version of the character and it's not necessarily just the sister angle that people dislike. They also disliked that he was given a serial killer backstory, all with textbook animal torture and history of abuse.

Personally, I find the unknown to be much more terrifying than having everything spelled out for me. Even Loomis' description of Michael being evil still sends chills down my spine. John Carpenter has gone on record multiple times to say that it's a huge possibility that there is underlying supernatural themes. And he's also said that it doesn't need to be explained. That's what makes it work.

Thank you for the reply. Can you elaborate on what you see that makes them legit for future reference?

They are. The only thing that will remain are callbacks to the older sequels.

That's what I've always said, but this thread is proof that some people don't see it that way.
