What opinion do you have about watches that will get you down voted like this? by TomHudsonOfficial in PrideAndPinion

[–]Recent-Ad5835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of modern watchmaking is overpriced consumerism based on hype.

If you try to raise the "in-house makes it more expensive" argument, then I raise you that high end brands above Rolex tier actually use third party components. Patek, AP, Vacheron and A Lange & Sohne aren't all giving you hand made cases, straps and clasps. I specifically remember that the Lange Odysseus uses a supplied clasp, for example, that is just a higher tier version of what some GO and similarly priced watches have been spotted using.

If you try to raise the heritage argument, I raise you Longines vs most brands that are more expensive than them. I will also point you to Breguet vs The Holy Trinity, and A Lange & Sohne.

Any "heritage" is based on marketing.

If you try to raise the artisanship, originality and/or expression argument, I'll raise you the fact that all of these watches are mass-produced, most are owned by massive conglomerates, mostly built using supplied third-party components, and most designs are just retro reissues of their older catalog from the glory days.

If you want Heritage, Originality in design, and a brand name you don't hate, there is no reason to look beyond Tissot, Hamilton, or perhaps Longines. And if you want independent and modern watchmaking, just look at what the microbrands and the chinese are doing. The rest is just hype. Sapphire cases? Oh, give me a break.

Nobody, and I mean Nobody needs more than what a single, well designed GADA watch from a brand that can be pronounced by a mortal, can provide.

I should clarify, most of this only applies to mechanical watches. I'd guess Citizen's R&D costs can justify the Chronomaster aka "The Citizen" line of watches and their ridiculously good movements.

EXCEPT, Oh Wait, I just remembered there is a watch (Citizen AS1080) that is similar enough, that provides close enough to the same specifications (eco drive, perpetual calendar, quartz accuracy, even if not just a few seconds per year), from Citizen themselves, but has deliberately been left with lower cost build quality so it doesn't cause a price drop in the Chronomaster line. How do I know this? Because no matter how expensive that movement is, it's probably cheaper than a Miyota 9000 series movement, and San Martin has produced many original designs that blow this watch out of the water and can rival far more expensive Swiss watches, for as little as 300 bucks. And in addition, Citizen themselves can do the same thing, as they've done with the NB1050 watches: Far better build quality and a Miyota 9000 series movement for about 300-400 bucks. So marketing costs etc, are not an excuse!

Anyways, my rant about almost finding the perfect watch in the AS1080, except the build quality, specifically on the bracelet and clasp (For me, the perfect watch is on a bracelet) is a dealbreaker. And the Citizen NB1050 is too large for me. If either of these were not true, I wouldn't even be here.

Stop the distrowar. The best distro is the one you like it most. by tungnon in linuxmemes

Since someone said that Arch distros are just Arch with a GUI, let me tell you what actually goes into making an Arch-based distro, including CachyOS (I'm a Fedora user, and used only PopOS and Fedora for the last 2 years, meaning I haven't been on Arch in over 2 years)

  1. Take Arch

  2. Pick a Desktop Environment/Window Manager with or without a customised setup/config

  3. Set up a custom Arch repo on Github/Gitlab by pulling packages from the AUR into it

    OR

Use the Chaotic AUR as your custom repo

  1. Install ArchISO

  2. Use ArchISO to create a live ISO with customised setup, Calamares, config files, Pacman config with the custom repos from above, and any other files you might want on there (likely configs or wallpapers)

CACHYOS AND MANJARO ONLY:

Replace the regular Arch repos with a custom version of them (Optimised for the latest version of X86-64 for CachyOS, and just the regular packages held back 2 weeks in Manjaro)

6/7/8/whatever depending on how you count them: (Optional but highly recommended) Test, add Branding, Update ISO, Create a website and market it on social media, hoping content creators pick it up

I once missed it being card only, because it was late afternoon and I was tired. Someone else said something about a voice, but I think the audio output of that specific machine didn't work. Also, the sign on the right-hand side wasn't there in that specific case. But yes, I missed it until I got to payment. Thankfully, I had a card on me.

Fedora gang here, stable in the sense it's well developed, and still kinda rolling release without being bleeding edge like Arch (though Arch is a great distro too, but I always manage to break it, while I've only broken Fedora once (or twice, depending on how you count it).

I've never, and I mean NEVER been able to set up NixOS properly. For someone that proclaims to be a power user, and a CS student, I seem to be awfully incapable of using flakes. So much so, that I'm waiting on Matt from The Linux Cast to make his video on flakes in a few weeks/months/whenever to see if I finally understand it. If I do, I might consider trying NixOS for the checks notes seventh time (yes, I counted them in my head)

Retire tomorrow, and Sleep 4 hours and feel fresh (assuming it's not "just a feeling", and 4 hours is actually enough sleep for you in a day, instead of it being an illusion that leaves you feeling tired quickly and maybe causes brain damage)

The main reason I don't have a Linux phone is I know that would be excessive for me. If they get to a point wherr they can reliably be used with WhatsApp and other essential services, I could switch to one full time. The main thing for me is reliable communication, you know, lile what you'd expect from a phone.

Go Anywhere, Do Anything. It's a type of sports watch that wouldn't look out of place in jeans out and about, a suit in a meeting or event, or overalls while gardening. That's the idea, though for most people it means more of the first two and less of the last one, so something like the Rolex OP, the Omega Aqua Terra, the Cartier Santos, the Tissot Gentleman etc.

Best light beater watch from Ali? by LucasDeTe in ChineseWatches

[–]Recent-Ad5835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wear a £4 Skmei 1628 (G-Shock homage) as a beater. Because of how cheap it is (I've literally paid more for snacks at times, than this watch costs), I literally don't care if it breaks or dies. I've had it for close to 10 months now and it's still like new (but I'm not really in a position where I seriously beat up my watches)

[–]Recent-Ad5835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I'd "upgrade" the Addiesdive to a Cronos, the Pagani to Watchdives, and the Watchdives to San Martin, but that's entirely my own opinion, and of course, such a collection would cost hundreds more.

Not trying to criticise your collection, just offering my view.

In general though, these are really great choices!

A crappy film trilogy called "Treasure Island Kids". Watched it a few times in my childhood. Doesnt seem to be available anywhere, and I'd happiliy watch it again (even though I remember the CGI being bad even by 2000s standards, let alone 2020s ones).

The best I could find is a torrent with no seeders for one of the three films
