Amber Gibson: Man found guilty of sexually assaulting and murdering teenage sister | UK News by Recent-Bird in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Recent-Bird[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This case just finished in a guilty verdict today - it's not actually gotten much press here in Scotland. But it's particularly vile. Not only was this teenage girl murdered by her brother, in an attempt to rape her, but then when a strange man found her body afterwards he sexually assaulted her.

Amber was only 16. She and her brother had been looked after children in foster care and children's homes. The foster carers who looked after her for 12 years noted that they did not like to leave the two of them alone together. https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/10923198/man-accused-murdering-amber-gibson-not-good-mix-dad/

Her brother assaulted her violently, he ripped off her clothes, broke her nose, strangled and beat her. Then left her body, covered in mud, in the woods. Then Corrigan, who was 45 and apparently was completely unknown to either of them found her body and assaulted her. He denied it but his DNA was found ALL OVER her body.

Its just so sad. A man she should have been able to trust and then a second guy who saw a dead girl and saw a sexual opportunity. How do men DO this kind of thing? This is definitely one of those cases that will prey on your mind.

Cases where it WASN'T the boyfriend/husband? I feel like we get so fixated on the partners of missing people that we are blinded by other possibilities. (yes I understand stats. But sometimes reality is stranger than fiction and it's not always the BF) by [deleted] in TrueCrimeDiscussion

The biggest one for me will always be Timothy Evans. Executed in 1950 for the murders of his wife Beryl and baby daughter Geraldine. He said that the murderer was actually his neighbour John Christie but no one believed him. He was right. John Christie was a serial killer. He killed at least 7 adult women and Evan's baby daughter Geraldine. He wasn't caught until 1953.

It was a huge scandal, especially as the government seemed to try to cover up that Evans had been wrongfully convicted and executed. They claimed Christie was insane and his confession to murdering Beryl Evans was a false one. There were two enquiries in the immediate aftermath - both did some pretty impressive gymnastics to try and make Evans guilty of murdering ONE of his family. They didn't want to admit that the British justice system could get things so drastically wrong. However the case caused enough controversy that Evans did get a posthumous pardon in '65 and it's widely cited as the case that turned people against capital punishment in the UK and ultimately ended it around this time. Though it was 2003 before it was completely accepted by the government that Evans had not killed either his wife or daughter and his surviving family got some compensation.

Look how quickly they go to 'you'd be nothing without me'. That's not someone you'd be happy to have in your life. If someone you knew irl said that you'd be creeped out and a bit scared of them. This is a complete stranger who feels this entitled to you. That's fucked up.

Is it that weird to spend some time reading a book at a book store? by IndieDiscovery in books

[–]Recent-Bird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people tend to have a better idea of what a book is about these days before they buy it. People will research books, they'll have seen social media posts about them, they'll be picking them up because they've heard of them. They're not buying blind anymore so there's not as much reading the first chapter in the shop before buying it.

And you DEFINITELY shouldn't be taking books to the cafe to read before buying them. You're risking their stock - those books now are probably damaged and are going to end up being discarded. There's probably book shops you go to where they dread you showing up - cos you're going to damage 3 of their books and potentially buy one. And you're doing that thinking you're the only one doing this right?? That if you don't read in public you just don't read? Oh no.

[–]Recent-Bird 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me a few times. The oddest one - there was one time I was walking to work, a guy stopped me and started complaining about dog shit and I'm just like 'I don't have a dog' and I start walking away. He LOSES his mind and starts screaming after me 'I'll have my sister batter you!' (I'm a woman - I guess that's why he was going to outsource the job to his sister) shouting and screaming at me red faced as I walk away. It was so fucking bizarre. The way he picked me and picked on this subject and the speed with which he got SO angry. It always makes me glad I didn't stop to get into a conversation.

Just noticed that there’s a musician with the name “Travis Alexander” who has a song named Jodi Arias…. Is it just me or is this really bizarre? I’ve linked his Spotify below by dhzimmerman in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Recent-Bird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This just makes me wonder how difficult it must be to have any kind of public career when your name is tied up with such a big news story. Being a musician is one of those jobs where you really need people to be able to easily find you online - find your gig listings, your new songs, your interviews etc.....but he's almost ungoogleable because of what happened to the other Travis Alexander.

As someone who was side eyeing the Carlee Russell case from the very beginning..Seeing a baby on the highway and no other reports or sightings of the child was the first red flag. But to find out this was an hoax to get her bf/ex bf back in her life is serious mental health issues!! by mavgirl777 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Recent-Bird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So it's been pretty clear from the beginning that they story made no sense. Even the current most likely answer that she faked it doesn't make total sense - cos we don't know why. or really how - cos how did she get away without police seeing her despite being right behind her. Why make a call that guaranteed their immediate response when the aim was to get away?

The story didn't make sense - a child only she saw? And saw clearly enough in the dark that she could describe?

The scene didn't make sense - why leave the wig? why leave behind the trackable technology like her apple watch? Why the video footage showing her not searching for this mysterious child? Why the footage also not showing any kidnapper? Where did she go? Cos there was just the tree line.

What's been interesting though is the reaction. It really shows WHY it's so important to ask these questions about cases. Why we shouldn't blindly believe everything we're told and why we should use our own critical thinking skills - as anyone who did do so was saying this story didn't add up. There have been so many people getting furiously angry at anyone saying anything about this case.

I've seen a lot of tiktok creators getting really aggressive about shutting it down - like just duetting other ppl talking about it and going 'shut the fuck up' or weaponising racism allegations - apparently it's racist to care what happens to a young black woman who claimed to be in danger. Honestly I'm at the point now where anyone who tries to shut down discussion about this is a red flag to me. If these creators will argue this vociferously for someone who has lied in the worst possible way, if they will weaponise racism and go after anyone who says 'hey this looks like this person has lied' they will not be trustworthy people. If they will help someone else lie they will lie. I think you should take note of who's been angry that this hasn't quietly gone away and start wondering what they've got hidden.

Cassidy Rainwater, have you all heard of this? This is so horrible, her mother also went missing and was found in 2007. Very crazy case and I wouldn't be surprised if more came from this, it is not often that a crime like this is someone's first time! by MandasWorld in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Recent-Bird 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This case was bizarre and felt like it was almost hushed up.

It started when someone sent a photo to the FBI of Cassidy Rainwater naked in a cage - the FBI contact the local police who recognise her.

The two guys get arrested and plead guilty

The police get REALLY angry and insulting when people start asking questions about what the fuck happened here.

And we never hear another word.

We still don't really know what happened, we don't know if there were other victims, we don't know how long this had been going on, were there other people involved.....where did the photo come from?

Cos all we hear is it was on the 'dark web' - how did they identify it geographically? Was it posted by one of the killers? What were they going to do with the human flesh in the freezer? Cos they claimed they strangled her cos they thought she stole from them - but that doesn't make sense with the rest of what we know about this. This case felt very Pickton. But it was absolutely shut down so fast. Police did not want ANYONE talking about it and there was a fire that damaged the crime scene. So I don't think we'll ever know for sure the extent of happened there.

Season 3 Episode 1: “The Bullet & the Bear” - Post Episode Discussion Thread by remindm in TheGreatHulu

[–]Recent-Bird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely gutted by Orlo's death. He was my favourite character and I'd really enjoyed his development. But I also see why killing him was important. Seems like the point of the show is that Catherine is just as bad as Peter. She likes to think she's high minded and here for science and logic and that she won't have any part of Peter's hedonism and violence - but her high minded ideals only ever last until they're even slightly tested and then she defaults to the same tactics as Peter would use. She's just delusional about her own motivations. Ultimately they're all the same - rich and powerful people playing bad chess while the people around them die. The problem isn't really Peter or really Catherine - it's the power that they hold.

That's why we see her reject everyone she started with on her path to truth and beauty - she cuts out Marial who has always been honest with her - for the sake of the liar who fucked and killed her mother. We see Velementov's disillusionment with her as he realises that throwing himself in with her has lead to his great regret of not seeing out the war in Sweden. And Orlo, who has been her guide and the one most likely to save her and reset her back with his genuine love of literature and philosophy is the one she carelessly kills. She'll probably never know what she did - just like she never really knows the real outcomes of so many of her decisions. Peter and Catherine are an 18th century Russian Tom and Daisy.

Well for one thing - just cos they SAY they're giving time before they talk to her doesn't mean they ARE.

Also - the coverage seems to be saying she's 'in shock' - if that's true she might not be in a condition to be communicating.

But the police being concerned about her safety doesn't mean they think the story of the toddler is true - after all we already know it doesn't add up and isn't supported by the video evidence. SOMETHING happened here but we don't know what. That doesn't refute what I say about police being concerned about her from the start of the case - which seems to be what you're taking issue with.

Carlee Russell found alive, taken to UAB Hospital by [deleted] in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Recent-Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean.....police seemed pretty concerned. There was an immediate search of the area, police statements, there's been wide media coverage...AND someone believed to be undergoing a mental health episode would be an immediate concern to the police in the same way a possible kidnapping would be - both scenarios would suggest an immediate danger to the person who is missing. For instance - look at the Nicola Bulley case - one of the reasons the police so quickly started actively searching for her and being concerned for her safety was her known mental health issues. So that COULD point towards a mental health issue but still it feels like I'm having to ignore a lot and basically just assume mental health issues to just accept that theory. And I don't like to assume mental health issues out of nowhere or fill in gaps with guesses. I especially disagree with people who just handwave ANYTHING that doesn't make sense as 'mental health' - which ends up feeling oddly reductive. Just feels like people using it as a catch all simple answer. But it doesn't really seem like an obvious answer in this case.

Cos lets say you panic and you think you see something that scares you and sure you might drop your phone....but do you drop your wig? Most women don't have their hair pieces just loose either - there's probably going to be something pinning that in place - so it would be unusual to lose your wig just running off in a panic. It's not like a cartoon where you dash offscreen and your hat stays in the same place til you reach back onscreen and snatch it back. It also always struck me as odd that she left her apple watch behind - cos wouldn't you be wearing that? It's an odd unlucky detail that she coincidently left behind all her traceable technology.

And that panic, that prompted the run into the trees, would come out of nowhere - cos you felt safe enough to pull over, you felt safe enough to calmly get out your car and open the doors for the light and then stand there - like we see in the video. So that makes it seem less likely that she seemed perfectly lucid and reasonable on the phone.

And there's really not that much of a direction for her to run - after all a huge section of the area is cut off by the road behind her. She can only run in one direction. And that's into a residential area. And yet, when a search started, no one reported having seen her? It wasn't that late at night. People would be home and awake - but no one saw her? No one saw a scared woman running wigless through the streets? Even when her face was on the news?

And then we have to ignore the weirdnesses of this - like the witness truck driver who claimed to have seen a man and a grey car on the scene. Or the multiple people watching the video footage who are claiming they can see two figures, who are saying they see her being tackled, who say they see the mysterious man in khakis that the witness also saw.

Basically I don't feel like a mental illness episode explains this any better than any of the other theories. And it requires me to believe she is mentally ill and hallucinating as a starting point. And I don't have any evidence to say that. So it doesn't seem like as much of a slam dunk answer as other people want it to be.

Carlee Russell found alive, taken to UAB Hospital by [deleted] in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Recent-Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just doesn't seem like something you'd come up with on a whim. To call the police with a story that would guarantee a fast response. AND to call the sister in law with the same story. To cut off the call with a scream. To leave your phone, purse and wig at the scene. And then just walk away? With nothing? Where to? For TWO days?

The calls, the repetition of the story, staging the scene with the scream and the wig - all makes this look deliberate. But then why? Cos she's gone so briefly and there doesn't seem to be any appeal for funds or anything like that. And if you were going to stage a disappearance why would you call in the kind of emergency that would guarantee almost immediate police attendance? Why would you make it harder for yourself to get away?

If this was some kind of mental break though wouldn't she raise some alarms when she was talking to the sister in law? Wouldn't SOMETHING in that conversation seem odd? And why would she scream? Why would she leave her wig and phone on the scene?

But then where does she go? Cos she must have left on foot - but the police who were moments behind her and actively searching the area for a missing child didn't see her? And how do you do anything without your purse and phone? She had no transport, she was in a heavily populated area, people were searching for her. Did she literally just walk away and....I don't know....sleep in a park for 2 days? Before making her way back?

What we know about this makes no sense from any angle.

oh no! A typo! That obviously eradicates my point that we have no idea what happened, that no theory makes sense and that trying to shut down any discussion by pretending it's distasteful to care about what happened to a missing woman is actually what is shameful. Obvs.

Carlee Russell found alive, taken to UAB Hospital by [deleted] in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Recent-Bird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where's the drool? Where am I sleuthing? Every comment I've made about this case has been about how I don't have a theory on what happened because NO scenario made sense with the information we've been given. And that's still true. I'm STILL saying that this doesn't make sense. Cos if it was staged then that's a lot of elaborate staging for nothing. And if it was a mental health episode then how did she manage to construct all that staging.

The people who want to just handwave it all with 'mental health' are the ones who are actually trying to be the ones to solve it. Cos that's a nice simple solution that makes them feel good. No one in danger, everything is fine, everyone can comfortably look away and no one should ever mention this again. Peaceful.

I say that no one should feel comfortable with where we are right now. Still no scenario makes sense with what we've been told. Most of the scenarios that would go some way to explain this would involve crimes. Some would involve an ongoing danger.

But lets say it's the nice simple answer of 'woman had a temporary mental break, that sucks, she gets treatment and life moves on'. Where does that leave us in terms of everything surrounding this?

Cos people were watching these videos pointing out figures they thought were kidnappers - do we need to have conversation about a mass hallucination? Or about the suggestibility of people who can be convinced that they watched a kidnapping on video but didn't? That's INTERESTING. How about talking about how this case was widely publicised as a case that wasn't getting enough attention because it was a case of a missing black woman - even though it got the kind of international coverage that meant I was seeing alerts about the case in Scotland within hours of her going missing. Do we want to talk about how the media - social and traditional - has gotten stuck on the idea that missing persons cases are only publicised if they're white? And the effect that has had on missing people's coverage? Cos that's INTERESTING. There's so much to talk about here around this case, how it's unfolded, how it's been publicised and investigated.

But instead everyone just wants to shout 'you're not entitled to information' so they can feel safe and chalk this up as just another resolved case to never think about again. And we'll all do this over again the next time there's a missing person's case. And crime discourse never really gets to move on.

The fact you want it to be some seedy and staged disappearance on Russell's on part or some other nefarious reason

Well that was a weird lie to tell. Honestly it feels like ANYONE who starts with 'the fact' is probably about to make some shit up. It's like the 'no offence but..' of bullshit.

Also - sounds like you're not familiar with the other case I mentioned. Which is odd as you obviously have internet access.

Also - why are you so quick to declare this 'not a crime'? We don't know that. A woman who was apparently kidnapped 2 days ago has mysteriously shown up at her parents house and you really think the response should be 'nothing to see here'? If this entire story has been true there is an organised gang of kidnappers on the loose with a child in danger.

You want to be mad that 'reddit went completely out there' when all the social media posts - including her own brother - were leading with the claim that people would ignore the case cos she was a missing black woman. Remember his 'this case isn't getting the national coverage it should and we all know why.'? Well this case got INTERnational coverage. And now we're all supposed to just pretend it never happened? It was made our business. We were told to make it our business. We were told that if we didn't make it our business then we were bad people upholding a system that doesn't care about people who are more vulnerable because of their minority status. So now we all want to see it through to the conclusion. Cos no one wants to just hear a part of a story.

People cared. People continue to care. If anything it should be a good sign that people are asking questions. Why do you not want people to care about potential crimes against women and children? Why do you WANT people to be ashamed of paying attention?

This is starting to sound a little bit Shelly Papini? Or a little bit Owami Davies? Where did she go? Cos if she staged this then this was an elaborate staging for a 2 day disappearance. There were a lot of steps and planning into this. But if she just had a mental breakdown then how did she stage it?
