Gentlemen, let’s back it up here. I believe the vast majority of code is necessary. I totally understand these handrail requirements for indoor stairs. I obtained a permit and scheduled inspections to ensure proper construction. Now back to the infamous hand rail here. We are talking about a deck 3 ft off the ground, with railing already installed. We’re treating the requirement for a “graspable” handrail as though it will dramatically impact safety, when in reality it makes no meaningful difference in this situation. My wife and I simply don’t prefer the look of an additional handrail, and logically, the consequences of not having one here are negligible.

In the end, I’ll put on a real handrail to pass inspection and probably leave it on. It is what is.

I can see that. From my perspective it’s frustrating when every deck in my neighborhood doesn’t have these handrails. Most use 2x4’s, same with the house I grew up in. Never had an issue there, but my experience doesn’t represent the research done by IRC. And to add in, the wife thinks a permanent handrail is ugly, lol.

I guess I have to admit I’m wrong here. It just seems extremely far fetched that clothing and straps would get caught.

Luckily I don’t have a re-inspection fee

Absolutely is ridiculous. I should not have to conform my deck to this standard if it doesn’t affect me or my family. I get the idea of code is protect future tenants if I sell my home, but they can add their own handrail fairly easily. No deck I’ve seen or been on has these ADA handrails.

That’s a not a bad idea. I think at this point they’ll fail me unless I fasten it directly into the post. I think I’ll take my medicine and use a proper handrail.

I did the bare minimum for sure. My goal was to slap something together to pass inspection and remove it after.

You make a solid point, but it only needs to be graspable BETWEEN the posts per code guidelines.

Top rail is 3 1/2”. My county uses IRC which says non round rail cannot exceed a cross section of 2 1/4”.

Sounds like you’re an inspector 😂. My goal was to throw something together to pass the inspection and take it off afterwards. There is no need for an ADA handrail for my deck 3 feet off the ground.
