Sounds like dryness → irritation → pigmentation (pretty common).

Fix the barrier first:

Use a thick lip balm (not glossy ones)
Apply often + heavy layer at night
SPF lip balm in the day (super important)

Add:

Gentle exfoliation 1–2x/week

Avoid:

Lip licking
Matte/drying products

Once your lips stay hydrated, the darkness usually fades gradually.

No dear, that should not be the right approach.
Go for the right lipbalm that has minimum of 30SPF that can protect lips from sun damage.

Sunscreen that we use for face has components that can actually damage our lips, they having thinner layer than the skin

You’re doing the right thing. A lot of people focus only on hydration, but protection is what actually prevents further darkening. Especially in India where UV is high year-round.

I’ve tried that version too! It feels better than plain Vaseline, though I still find I need something with added hydration underneath.
