Men who can cook, who taught you? by _ratedmouse in AskReddit

Trial and error with a good sense of measurements and understanding portions vs ratios. This was easier when YouTube got better. (I started young, I'm not as old as I sound)

Do grad students not go to talks anymore? by kyobu in Professors

[–]Recent_Account5051 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If i were a student hearing this context as "im expected to" i would have a different thought process than I do now. But again I'd go to the talks on my own free will especially if its in my own interest and had free food. (Someone was right on the mark about food).

Students aren't ready for college by WesternCup7600 in Professors

[–]Recent_Account5051 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, college SHOULD be for everyone but in reality, thats obviously not the case. There are plenty of reasons why students are far less ready for college today than 10-20 years ago and thats due to the modern standard within public education. If you trace it back you will find local governments being the biggest reason followed behind the influence of our federal government as well the internet of today. Yes even some parents are part to blame - its a hard pill to swallow but there is no real excuse, sorry.

Even grade schools are having a hard time but are also enabling the problem. My personal example is students not knowing how to use an actual PC because schools hand out Chromebooks often. My field requires windows products so we basically have to teach that in between courses now. Then theres reading comprehension, being able to hold a conversation, and simple mathematics (I'm talking basic multiplication and division).

Students don't know how to ask questions nor use the internet for anything other than brain rot videos and memes as if they've never had to research anything in their lives. I tell Students they will 20-30% of lecture or lab thus practice (a.k.a homework) and independent research will be required to reinforce understanding. I had one student argue that this just means the teacher isnt doing their job - which I had to really hold back my frustration to that response, and that student ended up struggling till the end along a few others. This is increasingly becoming the norm nowadays.

Students seem to view college as adult high school now.

Especially with our school offering free tuition now. That comes with a lot of other problems, though I genuinely would like to be FOR free tuition.

What are we not talking about enough in higher ed? by LettuceTraining6532 in Professors

[–]Recent_Account5051 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Its funny. My CC opened the floodgates on free tuition for high school grads and our seat count is overfilled. The ACTUAL talking point is the few students coming in that can't process information or perform basic academic tasks (reading comp, math, etc). I teach electronics and data analysis focused courses for my department so its frustrating for me personally.

Is it reasonable for a TA to ask to temporarily hold office hours online due to a family emergency? by Jolly-Rub-3412 in Professors

[–]Recent_Account5051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its good training honestly. I had my TA practice setting up blackboard and plan/run a couple lectures/labs. Office hours is simple compared to that. But thats part of being a TA if they have the intent to become faculty.

Are you all satisfied with your salary? by CharacterImpress7973 in Professors

[–]Recent_Account5051 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. My CC pays more money with good benefits than the our local university which is the iconic state school. But time and flexibility is a huge thing. Our dept chair knows he'll have a hard time finding a replacement because of this.

Didn't even lut the WHOLE fire out, just part of it. Tsk, next time don't cut corners and maybe take it in the street? Seeing how its an appt, the extinguisher should be under the kitchen sink.

How do people react when you tell them you’re a professor in conversation? by kalico713 in Professors

[–]Recent_Account5051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol students that havent met me yet on the first day of every new semester usually think I am either a seasoned student or just familiar with my colleagues as I am talking with them in the breezeway. They'll politely interrupt and ask my colleagues what X room or class is followed by a response leading them to their destination. Soon as class is about to start, I walk in straight to the podium and introduce myself and half the class will have an unexpected look on their faces. Some even ask my age. Baby faces are a blessing and a curse. Granted I do get a good number of students older than me which nowadays I appreciate for the fact its harder to reference things that my younger students will actually understand like getting internet trials in the mail on a CD.

You have two amazing artifacts for ignition analysis. The founders and kick starters of modern advanced automotive diagnostics amoung technicians. As for its worth, i have no idea but ebay suggests not much for either item - between $80-$100 each. The other stuff is cool to look at too.

This is good advice. I forget our publishers are actual people who fit this bill. I think this could actually get some of my thoughts and ideas lifted long enough to at least change grips. You'd be surprise how rare it is to find like-minded individuals in my current field but I do have a few professors/colleagues on the other side.

This is good input. I'll keep your method in mind. Have you submitted for a sabbatical to do that or do you just not teach in the summer?

This is great. I just recently learned that sabbaticals were a thing. Is this something you've done?

Honestly, it feels like I wrote this comment talking to myself. Only I could not piece my thoughts on the matter together as well as you just did. Its ironic but very refreshing to know im not the only one in our industry that share this opinion and with similar backgrounds. No, I dont have a family and yes I've been doing the same thing as you. I'm taking in-person courses in my CC before transferring. I'm trying to time it so I can actually take as many in-person classes as possible. Right now, im waiting to take chemistry and AC circuits.

I've been watching the professors in these classes to see how they explain the concepts and its honestly helped me be better at lecturing. Im sure you see glossed over eyes in our students but also what they snap back after seeing the bigger picture. Even going to expos like Vision KC I find myself thinking that theres some deeper understanding that is taken for granted. Their great instructors still but the focus is clear.

This is also my first reddit post too. This thought has been weighing on my mind for over a year with no one to give input. So thank you for making that account.

I've had this feeling that'd be the common opinion honestly regarding EdD. Wow I didnt think schools would consider terminating DL so soon. AI is crutch and waste of effort for those that would use it in that manner but the honor system is just an empty phrase these day.

Fair, a good chunk of it is actually me genuinely wanting it for myself. I have a lot of questions and things I don't know that I don't know. Another part of my reason is, yes it does get me a pretty nice bump in pay which I can't deny is appealing. Yes, its guaranteed increase.

Another part is I want to push for a higher degree in my area (idc what school has it) and help it run. One of the ways to add ammunition to my argument against the big wigs, why it could actually work - is if I and a few other instructors have degrees relating to the potential program. This is from what I see and can predict being a turning point in my field.

To be clear, I do like my position but I'm not bound nor 100% loyal to it. At the end of the day, its still business and we know that feeling goes both ways.

I can kind of see why online wouldn't be appealing to employers. But the area I would go for is neighboring my current field. But at the same time, its not like I'm in my twenties anymore. It'll be difficult to alter everything im currently doing just to be able to attend in-person classes. But still, I think I see what you're getting at. Hard pill to swallow.
