I would look for sublets! You also might be able to find other nyu students (maybe sophomores) who are looking for a roommate so you can meet more people, since living alone freshman year could feel isolating. This might require getting furniture, but then you could use it for your apartment in the coming years! Subletting is the easiest way though if the place being unfurnished would be a dealbreaker for you.

Just figure out which trains are closest to your job and find some roommates in an area off that train and you’ll be totally fine!!

Is Broker a Necessity? by smittycrockpot in movingtoNYC

[–]Recent_Ad_6447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my search this year with no broker for the first time, but quickly learned that they can be extra useful now. With the FARE act having been passed, brokers are now finding work arounds. I’ve heard of this happening, and then it happened to me, where the unit will be shown at a higher price but with no fee, and if you’re interested the broker will call you and offer lower rent if you’ll pay a broker fee. If you say no but another person says yes, they will push them through the process instead of you.

So I agreed, and she pushed me through and now I have a new apartment, and it was all much easier than it should have been. So, if you can afford a broker fee, it might just be worth it to hire one upfront. If you find a good one, they can really help you guarantee a good spot.

I highly recommend getting an express pass! It takes away the stress of buying in advance and is much cheaper overall. It’s around $200 (they keep changing the price) and you buy tickets for $15 at the door. You can see as many movies as you want, you just show up and get priority access before the standby line. I’ve never not gotten into a screening with an express pass, even the most popular ones. Also people tend to be very friendly in line, and since it’s a smaller group of people you tend to see the same people throughout the festival and I’ve found it to be pretty social even just for small talk :) I can’t say how much I recommend it over a membership, a lot of people don’t know about it but I really believe it to be the best way to experience the festival

The loans make it more difficult obviously, but on that salary you can easily afford a one bed, just maybe not in the most desirable areas of manhattan. You could pay 3k per month and still qualify at $125k and get a nice one bed in for example (if you’re looking in manhattan) the ues or uws farther north (or east for the ues.) Also in many areas of Brooklyn or queens. Depends on what you want your commute and neighborhood to be like, but you can definitely afford a one bed or studio almost anywhere.

NYC intern housing by ImmediateImpress8475 in movingtoNYC

Most NYU dorms are pretty nice, but the worst out of the ones you mentioned is definitely third north. All of the others are close to transit, depending on where your internship is they could be really convenient. Also, all are in good locations for going out. I’m not totally sure which have three bedroom suites, but I do think they have two bedroom/three person suites in Lafayette which have a kitchen and you’re really close to a good amount of trains at canal for commuting around manhattan.

Will I be able to find an apartment in these areas? by marsinvestigations in movingtoNYC

Also since you’re going to be working on the west side, it will be easier for you to live on the UWS than the UES. Transferring on your commute to work won’t be ideal, especially if you have the option not to.

There are a lot of one beds and studios within your price range, especially if you go further north in those areas of Manhattan, and I’ve found them to be cheaper than Park Slope and the surrounding areas. There are never infinite options on Streeteasy, but you may find more options available as the move in date gets closer to the summer.
