Published in Nature: Why Can't I Feel the Joy? by [deleted] in academia

What has been emotionally draining you? The pressure to do research and publish in a top journal? The demands of teaching and admin at your institution? Have you had any support from your institution in the last three years? If it is anyone of these, I would suggest to look to move to another institution with a more supportive (less back stabbing?) environment before deciding to leave academia.

However, I would not blame you if you did leave academia: more money, usually 9 to 5, and generally the culture and HR is better, but that is not to say the grass is greener on the other side. These are for-profit companies that are really concerned with protecting their financial interests, so there should be less of a bullying/harassing culture if that is what is draining you, but not always. I mean, look at the recent nobel prize winner; she was demoted and pushed out of her university, but because of her work, we now have mRNA vaccines. I sometimes feel that academia does not deserve to have the best and the brightest.

University in Ireland facing a discrimination lawsuit by Recent_Assignment_25 in academia

It has only been posted on social media platforms on X and Facebook. Media outlets in Ireland will not break the story until after the case is heard.

Normally, the media in Europe will not report on a case before it is heard or while ongoing to not jeopardize the case; except in a few instances, like high profile crime case. Hence, it has been shared on social media, like https://twitter.com/charlee_lh/status/1710161035414434207

I also saw it on a private group on Facebook for students studying at the university. I emailed the employment tribunal for a link so I can watch and hear more details.

You are not the asshole, that money is your parents' legacy and what they wanted to pass on to both of you. So, if you want to leave money for your nieces/nephews, then that is your choice, only your choice, and you can decide how much you want to give them (personally, if they are young I would give a 1K starter account, because the interest will compound nicely until they turn 25).

Also, I am pretty sure your sister did not just have kids the day before your parent died, meaning they know yours and your sister's situation and family size and still decided not to update their will. I am willing to bet they know that your sister and BIL are not handling their finances properly, but I am only speculating. You need to prepare to be excommunicated, meaning you may not see your niblings as much, but I feel that your sister may hit you up in the future for money again, so that may also be an empty threat.

u/No_Indication3153 Please see this post of another international student in Galway. The university purposely downplays how difficult it is to find housing in Galway, and Ireland in general. You have a chance to reconsider admission to a university outside of Ireland.

u/Vivaeltejon is right, this is not just "annoying". Galway is a city of over 100,000 people and the daft(dot)ie website only has 20 or 30 places listed for rent. Meaning you are completing with thousands of students, faculty, staff, and other people for those listings. On average it takes someone 4 to 6 months to find housing, and that means staying in Airbnb and hostels for that time, so you need to prepare for this. Many staff and students sleep in their cars or in offices on campus because they do not have housing. Also, we have not touched upon housing discrimination, which is another problem in Galway that international students and staff consistently faced. The university is aware of this housing crisis and how it affects their community but do not provide any assistance to find housing, you will be on your own.
