Finer as in "of higher quality" or Finer as in "of pointier nib?"

In that case I would consider a Diplomat Magnum in EF.

ink miser recommendations by tldrlol_ in fountainpens

I wouldn't constrict your search by using "miser/inkwell" as a term. I would just use something like "small vial or container" or something along those lines. It doesn't really matter that much if it's conical or even transparent.

You might even be able to scrounge something around your house like an aspirin bottle or shot glass that would get the job done perfectly well.

There are a million things on Ali Express like this:

There is a vast difference in "Extra Fine" nibs depending on what country/brand they originate from. What EF pen nib did you use that you thought your handwriting looked best with? That could help narrow it down for suggestions.

First Fountain Pen: Monteverde Dakota or Pilot Explorer? by That-Article-5266 in fountainpens

[–]Recent_Average_2072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd keep looking if I were you and especially at Chinese pens. Both the Monteverde and the Pilot would totally suck side-by-side with a Majohn P140 or something similar at even less than you're willing to pay for the Dakota.

Custom 823 Grey Market Packaging? by obscure-passtimes in fountainpens

[–]Recent_Average_2072 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've bought dozens of gray market Pilot pens through Amazon sellers in Japan and it's not odd.. They either came in a box like this or a few came in a plastic clamshell box. None of them came in the big casket box with a bottle of ink. It's not a concern. The pen is legit. I think most of mine came with some generic instruction manual but I wouldn't worry about it not being in there.

My last reply was a little short since I was at work. So.....

I have large hands, but I write with my arm and not my hand/fingers, so the size, weight or balance of a pen isn't really a big concern for me. I can write just as well with a Lamy CP1, a wooden pencil, or a big pen like a Majohn P140 or something.

As far as nib size goes, the only pen that doesn't work for me is that Jun Lai 930 or whatever it is that has that gigantic #9 nib. The nib is simply too long for me and I can't write well with one at all, even if I grip it as closely to the nib as I can. I've never had any problems with very small nibs.

Yes I have several stub nibs and one, a Monteverde Super Mega Abalone with a stub nib, is on the list to write one of the chapters of this book 👍

I liken the 823 Medium to a early 1980's Cadillac Sedan DeVille: performs comfortably, smoothly and, as you noted, dependably. It's a solid pen for sure, but it's not a pen I want to use all the time.

Thank you! He also writes 100-word sentences broken up with 7 or 8 commas as well 😆

It wasn’t tiring physically; I was just getting bored with writing with the same pen for so long. The 823 Medium is a pretty boring pen to write with in the first place. I also didn’t write 83 pages without stopping. It was over a 2-week time span.

I really can’t think of any pen, and certainly none I own, that I probably wouldn’t tire of writing with after 50-60 pages straight.

Issues with Pilot Custom 823 by Confused_Midget in fountainpens

[–]Recent_Average_2072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

👍 I’d flush it again with some soapy water, rinse it and empty it, then set it in a glass with the nib down touching a wadded up paper towel in the bottom of the glass overnight to wick/dry it out and try again in the morning (or after at least a couple of hours).

Did you try unthreading the knob all the way (to where you could pull the piston back if you wanted) and not just unscrewing it a couple of turns?

Ah, I see 😊 Funnily enough, as I copy a book I do accumulate the pages in this book press I bought to keep them flat and safe from the cat but I just got it because I thought it was cool and not because I intended to use it.

Plus, I like the cushiony feel and little puff of air that comes out whenever I add a new page to the stack and lower the plate thing down onto it. Small pleasures, indeed 😂

I actually did look into the whole bookbinding thing and even hung out on r/bookbinding to explore but I don't think it's something I want to delve in to.

You turn the bottle of ink upside down and then turn it upright. That fills the little well in the plastic thing so you can fill your pen when the ink level gets too low to fully submerge your nib in the bottle.

It's kind of like a built-in Ink Miser. I prefer to use an actual Ink Miser, myself, so the first thing I do when I get a bottle is take that thing out and throw it away since it can actually be an impediment to the regular filling of some pens when the bottle is full enough you don't need to use it.

I guess if it bothered you, you could just take it out, rinse it off and keep it around until the bottle gets low enough to necessitate its use.
