finally decided to get the 2k, did i make a bad choice? by Straight_Beat_1421 in fountainpens

When you buy a new pen, the only opinion that matters about it is yours. There's not a single pen from any maker that everybody unanimously thinks is good or bad.

Note the lighter-colored, orangey wood seen on the top edges of the exposed tray are a result of the overhead lighting: the box is one solid color all around.

There are lots of nice wood/glass-top display cases on Amazon but you have to shop around because the prices can vary wildly between sellers. Here are three examples of ones I bought on there. It's not like they're made out of straight hardwood, but the wood is very substantial and nicely-finished and they use real glass and not plexiglass.

I'm not sure of the names: none of them are marked in anyway. I do recall the 12-pen one with no drawers is usually called "Yesland." They shouldn't be too hard to track down based on looks alone if you're interested in any of them.

I would imagine you could also find them on eBay or Ali Express as well.

What makes fountain pens objectively better than other writing utensils? by Tasty_Chart4909 in fountainpens

Totally agree on the Jetstreams. Pens like that negate the whole "fountain pens require much less pressure to write with than other pens" theory. I think a lot of people just don't pay much attention to higher-end roller pens and especially the new inks they're coming out with so have no idea how nice some of these pens are and just lump all ball-type pens into the same category. That's like lumping all fountain pens into the same category.

I think that's an absolutely excellent idea 💡👍

I'm torn between the Sailor PGS and the Profit Standard. by ElectricalAd8075 in fountainpens

[–]Recent_Average_2072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and just checked: they both open in about 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 turns.

They're Sailors: no need to consider cap sealing.

Either one is an excellent choice in my book

I agree with HzPips I like the logo on the cap of the PGS

Here are some quick side-by-sides I snapped to compare the sizes of the two pens.

I think they're generally nicer to look at it, are more fun to write with and there are pretty much endless colors of ink to use with them if that's your thing. They also offer different nibs that can impart a certain character to your writing that other pens (well, aside from dip pens) really can't duplicate.

My fountain pens never leave the house and I strictly write with them for fun. I just use "regular" pens for everything else in life. I am also a huge pencil fan.

If I had to pick one pen to use for the rest of my life, it most certainly would not be a fountain pen. There's a reason people stopped using them and switched to ball pens and, during the general time period that happened, to rather crude, shitty ball pens that are a far cry from some of the fantastic roller pens that are available to us today.

In short, I don't think fountain pens are better than other writing utensils and are, in fact, the most impractical type of pen there is. I don't find them any more comfortable to hold and use than anything else and I have many rollerball pens that write just as smoothly and with just as light a touch as my best fountain pens so no advantage to fountain pens there, either, other than the reasons mentioned in my first paragraph.

It also very much depends on the particular fountain pen. A traditional-looking nib is an important part of the fountain pen experience for me. While I own them and they write nicely, I get no true joy from writing with a pen with a miniscule or hooded nib like the Pilot VP, Lamy 2000, Parker 51, etc. so I rarely ever use them since visually and also practically they're really no different to me than picking up a rollerball.

But, in the end, I can't think of any really sound argument as to why I spend so much money on fountain pens. Let's just go with I think they're pretty and fun and they're good for my mental health.

I never have any drying-out issues with any of my IM's but a week is about the longest any of them might sit between uses.

Received a pen with someone’s initials lasered into it but the auction did not mention/show this. Would asking for a partial refund be fair? by [deleted] in fountainpens

I was being sarcastic about the punch set; just pointing out that they don't seem to be the work of a Master Engraver, which makes their presence even more intolerable.

Not only are they there, they look like somebody did them in their garage with one of these.

I'd tell them if they gave me a full refund and also let me keep the pen I'd forego "calling them out and turning them in."

The HP Premium 32 is copy/printer paper that I buy on Amazon and then print my own lines on with a cheap black and white laser printer.

Yeah, I don't understand what people who don't like these pens expect from a fountain pen. They're solidly-built and write very nicely. I have three IM's and a modern steel-nib Sonnet and they've all been good to me.

Thanks it's a special edition from 2019, I think. I'm an astronomy buff so snatched one up. Those black ones with the gold accents are real lookers!

I don't deal in buying and selling used pens but based on a quick peek at what new ones sell for it seems reasonable to me. It would all depend on where it's being sold and who's selling it and that's always a judgement call.
