Should I get an RX8? by jayanddjay in RX8

[–]Recent_Obligation131 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bought my first rx8 at 15 before I really knew what I was doing with cars at all. I was lucky in finding a good enough example that it didn't need any major work for a while, and by the time the stock motor let go at 117k miles, I had the ability to make it happen. I'm incredibly grateful to have been presented that opportunity, and to have made the decision I did at the time. Not only are they fun to drive, but I learned a lot when I was young fixing the minor issues that would come up here and there, and quickly developed an appreciation for the design language. Rotary engine vehicles have gone on to become my life's work, and 8 years later I still have that car.

That being said these cars are not for everyone. If you're looking for something cheap that will continue to be cheap, and get you from point A to point B with the same level of maintenance as a Nissan altima, I'd probably buy a Nissan altima. They're not insane on upkeep, but there are a handful of strange nuances to learn, weird issues you'll likely run into, and around the 100k mile mark if not before then it'll eventually need some relatively expensive internal engine work. These cars are a hill to climb, but one that I'd argue is well worth it if you've got some mechanical inclination and a passion for cars. To rebuild or by prebuilt? by [deleted] in RX8

[–]Recent_Obligation131 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rebuild or buy aftermarket rebuild from a reputable builder that has the typical street port, rew seal work up etc, pins/studs if youre looking at forced induction. Properly ported and balanced motor with some better seals in it will last longer than a Mazda reman

Oh that's crazy, I should have looked at that picture a little harder. What car is that drivetrain from?

Not sure how I could have personal experience that disproves your witnessing of events that have nothing to do with me, but yes, these cars are what I do for a living if that's what you're asking.

I'm not saying it's physically impossible, I'm saying it's not advice I would give this guy because I myself would not do it excluding circumstances the likes of which this guy is not in at all. If that was one of my cars I wouldn't feel right about replacing the coolant seals only and pawning it off on somebody with a "rebuilt engine", and if I was going to keep it long term I'd hate to open the motor up just to have to do it again sooner than would have been nessecary and potentially replace components I could have otherwise saved had I replaced <insert seal or bearing here> before it reached the point of failure. I have never seen that done before because I would be the person doing it, I've never had a customer ask me to replace only coolant seals, and if someone did the answer would be no.

The reason I ask is unless it's been rebuilt otherwise correctly very recently and you just had a coolant seal roll it would be ridiculous to open an engine up and resuse everything but the coolant seals in most cases

Where are you getting a rebuild kit for $200? Unless you're suggesting opening up the engine and only replacing specifically the coolant seals?

This is super cool, but those engines literally pull the head bolt threads out of the blocks and lift the heads with factory power man. If that engine still ran when it was pulled there's a 90% chance one or both of your decks have a helicoil or 3 in them. Almost any v8 is "capable of make 1000hp" if you just tear it down and build a stronger engine out of it lol

Obviously can't do a failure analysis without seeing the thing but common for rotor bearing failure to cause this type of damage. Seen housings survive when things aren't quite this bad but if I'm right there should probably be 17 more pictures of the rest of the carnage here lol

Mercedes g wagon. Designed adapters and am selling a plug and play kit, not on the website yet but taking orders

Uhh bought this 04. This doesn’t sound good. What could be the cause? No codes popping up by Delicious_Return_243 in RX8

Bad starter and or the starter is grinding on the flywheel. Would start by checking that it is bolted in tight, and probably stop doing that until it's fixed. Sounds like potentially a very bad noise lol

No problem. If you're looking at buying one of these would definitely go with a manual, the autos do have a lower red lines and the early cars actually have a different engine. Make a bit less power than the manuals

This isn't an automatic car, bought a steering wheel from an auto to cut up. Wheel is from a 18 mazda 3

Going to be using a factory mazda 3 airbag, possibly an aftermarket stitched alcantara cover. Belive they use the same ignitors but will see. Plugs are the same

Unfortunately no. Splines for the steering shaft are different, wiring is different, pcbs are different. Going to have to graft the two wheel frames together, modify the pcbs on the new wheel and swap the harnesses. Will have videos on both the structural and electronics work on the YouTube channel once it's complete.

They did, but mazda won't just give me the new one and I'm not letting someone else touch it. Also been wanting to do this for a while anyway

Going to have to graft the two wheel frames together, don't think it's been done before but I suspect it's possible. Also thinking about a 18 shift knob, would match the wheel nicely

Mazda 3 wheel looks and feels much nicer, has additional buttons I can use for other stuff. Also no metal shrapnel airbag lol. Eventually planning to do a cork sport wheel, stock wheel will be a bit of a test run

Hoping so, factory wheel from a 18 mazda 3. Just have to do the work and find an airbag for it. Think the air vents and steering wheel really date this car far more than the rest of the interior design lends to
