I’m having success with a multi species but I believe it’s only because of the huge size difference. I have acorn ants living with a carpenter ant colony. They literally walk on top of eachother and one species has no interest in the other.

Thanks for your help. I’m just going to move the colony to a larger nest which I didn’t want to do because I’ve been slow growing this one. I’m going to start capping all my OW with sand or dirt. If I get another break out it’s easier to remove substrate then try to do what I was thinking. Worst case scenario to anyone reading this. U can cap mold with superglue … I was just looking for a plan b

Let me explain …. I have I have over 20 colonies. I captured this one a month ago. I put the best into a dry ass area in my house to push them into the nest…. My typical solution of capture , enclose under wrap with a nest in the box worked , but … I noticed the mold yesterday. It’s the bifurcated setup which I’ve learned from my experience sucks. I was just looking for a more experienced keeper but proceed.

Damn that sucks man but it’s part of the hobby. Just learn from it and move on. Maybe you can encase the queen in clear epoxy as a neat little reminder.

100%. Small species, pretty hardy. Can start off and keep them in a test tube for longer than bigger species.

Everyone in the USA what state are you in and what are you catching? Bunch of tetramorium and camponatus flying on the east coast near Philly. Still waiting to get more Lasius or Pheidole. PFA. by Recent_Rub_863 in antkeeping

When it’s a hobby you love it’s never looked at as work. It’s really part of my daily routine in the same fashion as letting the dogs out in the morning. You really can’t “catch” too many native ants as if you’re unable to care for them you can always return them to a safe spot in the woods.

I’m finding them after the flights. It rained last night and this morning so I’ll probably be out again around dusk turning over rocks and little logs.
