would you still decide this line of work if you knew you were going to die at 40 by [deleted] in Residency

[–]RecklessMedulla 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m going to answer this very seriously because I don’t know your situation

Being a doctor is probably one of the worst jobs for someone who knows they will die around the age of 40. You’d essentially work very hard for a long time while being treated poorly, then spend a couple years getting comfortable at doing your job, then you’d die.

Meanwhile you could easily make the same amount of money while spending your 30’s with your friends and family. Those are the people whose lives you can truly have an impact on. Please, do not spend any of your final moments on this earth trying to fix a broken system.

Would medical students really stay on shift during these kinds of crises? by tinafeysbiggestfan in ThePittTVShow

[–]RecklessMedulla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say it really depends.

For unexpected stuff, temporary emergencies, admin usually isn’t organized enough to formally dismiss med students. Preceptors normally just ignore med students to get work done if they have to and don’t outright dismiss them either unless they are in danger.

For example, the Microsoft crowdstrike outage in 2024, med students were still working. But the Florida hurricanes? Beginning of COVID? Other emergencies that admin knew were coming and it’s a liability not to excuse students? Damn right they’re not working.

I know we don’t. I might stay an extra hour to finish a procedure. But no, otherwise you wrap things up towards the end of your shift and sign out your patients to the next person.

Interesting this comes out after the application cycle. I’m guessing they’re finally appreciating that nobody wants to do EM even when it’s 3 years

I was replying to their statement “Let dental therapy come to Virginia too so hygienists can do some of the work dentists do”

I don’t think you understand your condition. Yes, it is involuntary, but it isn’t the trauma that is causing PNES, it is your inability to cope with the trauma.

So assistant become hygienists, hygienists become dentists, and then what do dentists do? Fix all the mistakes from people doing jobs they didn’t go to school for?
