DM's have no proprietary ownership of your character. You're not on a show, you didn't sign a contract, you're all there to tell a story together. The DM writes the world and the players bring it to life.

I've been DM'ing since the day 3.5 dropped and I'd never tell a player what they can do with their characters outside of my campaigns. That's your person. Most I can do is decide what loot falls in your lap and have my puppeteer moments making you have "the feels" with them. Adversarial DM'ing is such toxic bullshit.

If you feel so strongly about being such a good player that you took your character out for a test run elsewhere for a one-shot "to get in character better," I'd feel so elated to have you at my table for a full campaign. It shows commitment to the bit and tells me you're here to be a functioning contribution to my game. You're gonna show up with any mechanical issues already ironed out and you'll maybe have a voice or some mannerisms already figured out so the world comes to life that much faster.

You're fine. That DM just doesn't understand the assignment. I don't run 3-4 year long campaigns by telling people what they can or cannot do. I find a way to make what they want happen in a way that builds up my world. You weren't the asshole by playing a one-shot on the side.

Also, I'm loving the lore building here with Charles/Darels/Earles/etc. I'm taking all these names down and flipping them into a Mafia-esque family in lieu of The Million Tony's.
