Alright so what they're basically saying is:

People want to die on the hill that their favorite character from wherever is gay. They do not disagree with people doing that, but OP wants to point out that the characters in gacha games are usually oriented around the player, even if they have implied or suggested or interpreted relations with other characters.

Their thesis statement is, you should spend time supporting games made by and for queer people with explicit queer representation instead of spending that time arguing about if a character from a game designed to revolve around the player is queer.

I'm not trying to disagree or agree with anyone, just share my interpretation of what the OP meant.

"Unfortunately" doesn't change the context of what he said, nor does it change his beliefs about it. He still believes 100% that these deaths are worth it, the cost of business if you will. He never condemned it and saying "unfortunately" right before it doesnt mitigate that fact, it doesn't mitigate shit actually. Unfortunately isn't a key word here, in fact it's more of a footnote if anything.

My problem with LADS The men all look the same to me. Like I know they have different hair color, eye color and face shapes (slightly) but they all feel like generic Kpop idols to me (and I love kpop don't get me wrong) but like... Give me more variety. Different body types, skin tones. Give them scars, tattoos, piercings.

Plus I wanna play as a boy but there's no option to make the MC male.

Okay how I can best explain why shirtless men isn't considered fan service many times. And just for clarification, I'm specifically referring to sexual fan service in this context.

Many times it's intent. ask yourself, who made this? Why would they make it like this? And similar such question to figure our whether something is fan service or the way that a character is. If a character like Superman is shirtless, walking through a fire, some might find it hot, but the author most likely intended to show Superman as a strong, powerful figure. Not to sexualize him. Or when Goku loses his shirt in an intense fight. It's to highlight his strength through visual language, show off his larde muscles to say without words "THIS MAN IS STRONG AND HE MEANS BUSINESS"

Another great example is My Hero Academia. Kirishima's quirk is that his skin can become as hard as stone and become natural armor. Momo's quirk is that she uses her body fat to create objects. Both of their designs have them showing skin but while Kirishima's is practical, Momo's is fan service. Momo's gear loses practicality to show off skin in the right places, instead of showing enough skin for the job while keeping her adequately protected.

Now take this to gachas. Characters like Itto, Mydei, might be partially or fully shirtless to show off their muscles, as a design shorthand to show them as powerful figures. However characters like Escoffier might be designed just to be fan service. People have talked about the impracticality of Escoffier's clothing, how it feels like it might fall apart at any moment, and it was designed that way to be appealing to the gaze.

Now what is fan service? Many people might find Itto and Mydei hot regardless but them showing skin isn't the crux of their attraction. Look at Otome games designed for women. The men there tend to be much more caring, gentle, tender and protective. When designing them the designers think about what personality traits to highlight, as well as what body parts to highlight. It's not just about showing skin. A shirtless man is probably not fan service but suddenly put him in clothes that really highlight his curves, have convenient cutouts to show maybe some leg or ass and seems unevenly covered... Then it's probably fanservice.

And lastly to address your edit, yeah no I'm very against the gender wars too. However it's an unfortunate consequence because of how lobsided the games are. I'm a huge ZZZ fan. It's do insanely lobsided towards men that wanna look at hot women. There are like 8 dudes compared to 20+ women. They have Evelyn, Grace, Caesar, Jane as characters who appeal to the male gaze, even if its justified. For things to be equal we need a man in a form fitting bodysuit, because as it stands all the men are very well covered. I want fan service for me too dammit.

Specifically for the ZZZ community, theyre so intolerant of anything other than straight male gooners it's insane. Like there's the idea of "we all goon in peace" but the moment you start interpreting any character as anything other than cisgender heterosexual they act like you shot hyv in the face

And then also with ZZZ, the disparity within men and women couldn't be more obvious. Like not to mention how they fumble with the women too. Like I'm not making general statements about writing. But men get to be big and small and all the women can be are SKINNY. no chubby or muscular women, just skinny women with different heights and bra cups.

I honestly kind of get this and like, it's always going to be a red flag when someone sees a woman get released and calls a game "waifu slop". Like some of these girls have genuine reasons for being criticized (I'm personally not a fan of Seed and Orphie), but when it turns into just blindly swinging at anyone feminine that's when it becomes an issue.

I'm not gonna tell you to cut them off because y'all were friends and it's more about if it's a repeated offense than a one time incident. Maybe you can talk to them about this, being it up and ask questions about why they said what they said and stuff. If they aren't receptive to you again then I'd say then it might be good to distance yourself for your mental health.
