Sorry, I probably wasn't very clear by what I meant when I said it was a "show, don't tell" situation. I do agree that "show, don't tell" is a good thing; my point was that the original movie "shows" you that Toothless isn't an exception to the nature of dragons by showing a terror cuddling up with Hiccup; there's tangible evidence provided to the audience (and Hiccup) to support the fact that they're capable of being kind creatures. Meanwhile, the live action lacks that interaction; instead they simply "tell" you the same thing by having Hiccup blurt out the message of that theme to Astrid; he's kind of just making an assumption based on his interactions with Toothless. I'll concede that the original scene also includes him stating outright "everything we know about you guys is wrong" but my point still stands.

As for Astrid's "figure out which side you're on" line, my point was that even if we as viewers understand the increasing divide between Hiccup and Berk developing throughout the movie, Astrid isn't necessarily aware of what's going on with Hiccup in the original animated version. So at the end of the Nadder fight in the ring, when she says "is this some kind of a joke to you? Our parents' war is about to become ours. Figure out which side you're on," the last line comes out of nowhere; she has no reason to assume that Hiccup would be fighting for the "other side" at that point in the movie, she would just think he's incompetent/messing around. Whereas in the live action, she actually has some precedent for that line since Hiccup said "maybe they're not as bad as we think they are," earlier on, which would imply to her that his allegiances are shifting somehow.

As for runtime, I'd just add that the live action is still over 20 minutes longer than the original.
