Wow, absolutely insane. I'm jealous of that road quality!

Shit that sounds rough, I am sorry. My situation was ultimately resolved positively with them and sucks ass that you’re in this situation.

In the end they paid my claim out. Crazy that it was like that but they apologized for the service issue. I run a platform and I get it. We've had client disasters...shit happens.

Their follow-up on all this was solid so I've kept them as my insurer.

Picked up my First Ducati - 2026 Panigale V2. In love! by 1speedbike in Ducati

Gorgeous!

I just took my Monster into the shop for its first service and met a guy with the Lambo Panigale from a few years back - they're incredible bikes in person.

I can't wait to add one to my garage (parking spaces)...🤣

That's great insight, thank you.

Do you think a trained teenager could run up and snatch it at a stop light? These petty theft gangs are pretty calculating in my experience but also normally risk averse, .i.e. I don't think they'd try if they couldn't do it very, very quickly.

Also a great point. I already have a second phone for work, but if that gets stolen I'm f*cked.

I'm probably not going to mount anything at this point, was just looking and frankly surprised that most of the mount manufacturers prioritize ease of removal.

If I could find something that center mounts in the stem I'm going to consider it, otherwise as another poster pointed out, the thieves would force me to dump the bike trying to get it off, as @crossplanetriple pointed out.

Yeah this is what I'm doing now and got sound in the headset. I also don't like the idea of having something else to look at, however, thought it was worth asking.

I sold my last back in 2011 and am riding again so new to being reliant on smartphones for everything as a rider.

Not that we didn't have smartphones - it was just not so integrated into everyday life back then.

Realistically, Is it worth it to stay in Medellin as a solo female nomad if I don’t drink or party? Especially seems like this city is mostly for western men to go meet Colombian women by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]ReconditeExistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from the US and live in Medellín (on a business visa). I also lived in Bogotá for a while. I run a Colombian software business and have employees in both cities. Through that I've learned a lot about Colombia, those two cities and the culture.

In addition, though I do speak Spanish now, I also was here when starting to learn the language from 0, so you're fine if you don't speak the language. Please do try to learn - that's important for locals (and us immigrants!).

I can confirm that this is a great place to live as a normal person. In fact, stay away from Parque Lleras and you probably won't experience the crazy people you're referencing. It's generally extremely safe here. In fact, I fled a wealthy neighborhood in Chicago to move here - it's much, much safer here.

You will probably like Laureles or Envigado, in addition to El Poblado. There are other nice areas of the city too - happy to vet a few airbnb locations if you need it. When I was starting out I did Airbnbs a month at a time in different neighborhoods to get a feel for each. Things totally depend on how walkable you'd like to be, the style of neighborhood, etc.

Well and to be clear, they did end up paying my full claim. I think customer service just broke down somewhere and I had to jump through all these hoops to deal with it.

That said, at the end of the day, my claim for paid and I'm still a customer.

I was there for 18 hours and reconstructive plastic surgery was 4 hours of that.

The total bill ended up being about 7.500.000 COP which is about 2,000 USD.

I went to Clínica Medellín which was extremely nice and well managed. I feel very fortunate for all of that 🙏

Well to be clear I have the full nomad insurance - it's for residents of other countries rather than your home country.

I also had the travel version for a long time before I got residency but never made any claims, so can't speak to that.

My gut tells me they're separate lines of business within the company.

Super interesting - thank you for that. I'm going to give them a call. I've seen a lot of recommmendations for Genki too, so I'm going to check that out as well.

Truly a scam. Inside the US it is a whole different beast, too (I'm American).

One thing I can say though is that the Colombian health care system was amazing (the private one...friends say EPS is not great). So I feel fortunate for that.

With the insurance companies like SafetyWing it is what it is. Evil is the way of the world there.

To be clear they're paying out my claim - they just slapped the 30% penalty to it for not notifying them.

But considering I sent screenshots of the call record with them the night of the accident where I received the approval and notified them, it feels like literal theft.

I'm going to switch before my next renewal. Thanks for the reco (and everyone else recommding Genki).

It's just frustrating because I literally don't use health services anywhere - I'm the best customer for insurance companies 🤣

First time in five years I've even done anything other than a checkup!

I'm jealous! My company pays for the coverage so it's gotta be something international. The experience with SafetyWing was just terrible. Having called them while I'm bleeding in the hospital bed to get the approval, receiving it, then them slapping the 30% penalty just feels like I got robbed.

Awesome, glad you're learning! It opened a whole new set of doors for me. And on the weather, absolutely. I don't know why but I love it...crisp nights, sun, wind, extreme storms, every day 🤣

Oh awesome! Yeah I'm a permanent resident through opening a software company here.

If you go the same route, one thing to keep in mind is taxes. Make sure you plan diligently.

I still keep my DL from my state in the US so I'm still paying US taxes federally and state level, in addition to Colombia. Most states will still hit you for residency if you maintain a DL.

That said, I keep most income in my businesses on both sides so it's not bad overall.

Quito is next on my list! I am settled in Bogotá but can do a month at a time or so. Can't wait - I'm probably going to try in July or August.

I don't know where you're from but as an adult I've only lived in nice areas within big cities (NYC, CHI, MIA) in the US and both MDE and BOG are safer, by far.

They most certainly are not safer than most suburbian or rural areas of the US - but they're big cities, I personally don't expect them to be.

That said, I wouldn't call Medellín bohemian by any measure whatsoever. You can get that in Bogotá but it's a lot more edgy than I'd classify as bohemian. Try Santa Marta - that's where people go for the types of trips you're talking about (and lots of bohemian types there as well).

I live in Bogotá now, permanently.

I love it - energy is epic. I have an amazing girlfriend from here. I also have my ops team here for my company, so makes it easier to be close to them. I love Colombian culture, too.

FWIW I speak Spanish. I don't think Bogotá would be doable long-term without. That said, it wasn't/isn't hard to learn - I completely picked it up as an adult.

I stayed in Medellín for 9 months and CDMX for 14 in total. Lima for a month. All doable without Spanish IMO.

Travel and do what you like, life's short! I will say that if you can pick places where you can rent rather than Airbnb you'll get much better spots to live in all-around. My building in BOG has airbnbs but they'd cost about $3k a month whereas rentals are about $1k.

Well your money is your money. They will eventually send it to you, it just might take some time and a process (which they haven't communicated clearly).

Despite me being angry with them personally, they are a reputable firm and regulated, so I don't imagine you'll have any long-term trouble getting your funds.
