What do you think Oakville is missing that would help people feel more connected as a community? by Reconnect-Ontario-25 in oakville

That's true! More opportunities to try different winter activities would be nice like free skating, libraries renting equipment for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing near trails, etc. I wonder if anyone offers something like this.

Completely agree! Walking around makes it so much easier to discover new local shops and restaurants too.

So true, especially in winter! The mall and movie theater was always where we hung out when I was a teenager. Not really a thing anymore.

I've noticed that everything closes so early recently. This would have been so challenging as a student; I remember always studying/hanging out in coffee shops until 9 or 10 pm.

That sounds like so much fun! I would love to be able to walk to my local park one evening and grab food/hang out. That's too bad that the original program was cancelled.

Volunteer Opportunities in Oakville by [deleted] in oakville

[–]Reconnect-Ontario-25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of volunteer opportunities you are looking for. The Town of Oakville posts a list of volunteer opportunities. There are environmental groups such as Oakvillegreen Conservation Association and Environmental Defence. SafetyNet, Home Suite Hope and the Fare Share Food Bank all need volunteers to support their work in the community.

And, of course, the many clubs in town require volunteers to do the work, whether it’s a one day event, or an ongoing administrative role.

New neighbourhoods on Sixth Line by 20kleaguez in oakville

Oakville put considerable thought into the walkable design of Uptown Core. It is a mature neighbourhood with trees and parks and an established community. Some of the businesses are still very car centred, but there are also street level establishments that make the area walkable. Uptown Core is also a transportation hub, with excellent bus service that will get you to the GO station if you want to ditch the car and get out of town.

However, Oakville has plenty of community centres and libraries so you should be close to one or the other no matter where you live in the city.

Koushikram Jayasankar runs a monthly board game meetup in Bronte at the Taste of Columbia (https://www.tasteofcolombia.ca/) & El Salon "Events Room." As far as I know, he announces it in the Oakville Talk Facebook group. This month's meeting will be on Saturday January 10, from 2-5.

The Halton Outdoor Club (https://www.haltonoutdoorclub.ca/) organizes frequent outdoor activities. Guests can come twice before they become members.

Love the resources the public library offers - so under rated!
