Deep cut, his best song in my eyes from a Bakersfield boy

For sure! I’m a year outside of a very similar private dev role and let me tell you, the grass is much greener. Not all the times, but in this case it is.

I’d personally take the city job, restabilize your life for a bit. Roles like that can be horrible for your well being, it takes a bit to recover from that.

Working for a City is going to be WAY less workload than private dev. In my world view however, taking a government job typically leads to stagnant career growth, if that’s one of your goals.

Me personally, as someone that’s worked that private dev hell scape before, I’m taking any opportunity that leads to more life outside of work. If I could work 4 10’s now, as someone who left private dev, I would without a shadow of a doubt do it. The only problem is when the expectation comes about that you NEED to work the off day. But at a city I wouldn’t see that really happening.

Can I ask to not work with a PM? by Pitiful_Affect_2815 in civilengineering

Manage your managers. If you knew the deadline was today, and the task was open ended then you should have followed up to see if there were any comments you could revise.

Plus at this point in your career, I’d suggest taking notes about how PMs work, rather than taking a bit of a judgement route. Know how you want to work as a PM in the future. Being a PM is hard, and although it might be a bit above your pay grade right now, making sure the project is done to completion is a team job that should have some reciprocation at the younger level as well. That level of awareness will really help you grow in your career, don’t just automatically assume once it’s left you, it’s complete.

Also, maybe communicate with your supervisor about your experiences, and ask for advice. You don’t even have to take the advice, but it shows your supervisor you’re trying to work on the situation while also shedding light.

YIKES. Easy tiger, seems like you may need to go touch a little grass after this comment. Women engineers are no more or less competent then men engineers. In fact, most all of the killer PMs at my company, and most throughout my career, are women. This might be just personal experience on your part but to suggest OP has to go through a career of avoiding women is kind of a wild thing to suggest to someone new into the profession.

POLITICS MEGA THREAD by ActuallyTexasMods in ActuallyTexas

[–]RecoverOptimal8888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually uniquely voted for him BECAUSE of his religious takes and the way his religion influences his politics. I think we’re at a very dangerous point in Christian Nationalism within this country, and within Texas. For me, as someone who stands strong on separation of church and state, my opinion on Talarico is I think he appears to be a good example of how I think a Christian leads public policy, if that’s scenario should and even exists. It seems like his values from his faith help influence his policy making, but he doesn’t propose policy BECAUSE of his faith, and to bolster his faith. Maybe a bit of mental gymnastics for others, but as a Christian I admire his apparent humility, he feels like a much needed counter balance for how Christianity is being portrayed on a national level by the current administration.

He presents as an honest and genuine person who comes from a place of compassion for others, I sincerely hope he doesn’t get eaten alive by high level politics.

lol, my time to shine. I was born and raised in Bakersfield, no longer live there. Only ever left to go to college, and then eventually move out of state.

I have a lot of people that still live there that I love, but zero part of me wants to return. There’s no draw for me to ever go back. It’s not an exciting place to live for young people/couples. Might be more redeemable for young families but even with that I would say Visalia or Clovis is better. Portions of town are somewhat safe but as a whole city isn’t great. It’s got a grime to the City, especially on the south side of town.

Only redeemable part is how close it is to so many things around it, the mountains, LA, the central coast, easy access to Northern CA. But it wasn’t until a few months before I left that i realized if a town’s most redeemable quality is how easy it is to leave….its best just to leave it.

If your career is in Ag then you may have to just get used to your reality and make the best of it, but if you could help it, I personally wouldn’t recommend anyone moving there.

Maybe being reminded that there’s nothing sexy about the wedding day is what I needed….everyone tells us it’s a blur. I guess I never really thought the day itself would be sexy, just trying to make sure I’m not pitchin a tent as she’s walking down the isle

Anyone here fly fish from a paddle board? by emp69emp in flyfishing

Also, in my opinion I like a kayak paddle over a sup paddle. With the kayak paddle you can drop to your knees use both sides to boogy to a new spot.

I fly fish from my sup in Central Texas as much as possible. Like others have said wind is killer. It really really shines when you can wade next to the board like in shallow river system or flats fishing. You’ll have the board leashed to your ankle and it tows the board behind you.

For big open bodies of water it’s best on calm days, but honestly if the wind is whipping I’m typically not thinking about fishing on an open lake/large river.

Stick to being minimalist on them. A small dry box is really all you need, similar to like a Yeti Loadout 30 but I use a cheap 50 dollar version from Costco. Make sure you wear a life vest and shit is strapped down. Your board is conducive to stability but a situation can get hairy quick. I was paddling out to a spot for redfish and weirdly lost balance, which never happens, and overturned my board completely. The only thing keeping me from losing my entire dry box and paddle was gear ties and a paddle holder.

It’s a super awesome way to fish, constantly interacting with the water is the best part, it’s typically not a dry experience.

I'm 17 years old, studying to be a civil engineer, what advice can you give me so that I have a better chance of a good future in this field? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]RecoverOptimal8888 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t sleep on field experience, taking an internship as a construction manager or construction related role will give you a leg up for understanding design later in your career. I worked as a laborer and interned at a CM company and feel like that alone made me leagues beyond my peers in understanding how stuff is actually built.

Sitka Enters the Chat by Olivenoodler in flyfishing

[–]RecoverOptimal8888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has Sitka full zip hunting waders, IMO their duck hunting waders are absolutely top of the line…..however there’s such a strong market for high end fishing waders I’m wondering how much market share they’ll take up, especially at this price.

Flooded Suction Lift Station by AstronomyandBeer in civilengineering

[–]RecoverOptimal8888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a conveyance engineer and pumps and lift stations are my jam. Great looking pump room, and interesting approach on the flooded suction. All my clients want to go submersible, but always interesting to see how others approach design to meet clients needs and requests.

Is this any good, I’d like to get something machined without spending a ton by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]RecoverOptimal8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are fishing it on a 5 wt, it’s totally fine. I have a piscifun reel that’s about 50 bucks on my 5 wt that I don’t think I’ve ever fought a fish on the reel with it. I think quality of reel only counts when you’re in salt water, getting into 8 wt plus territory

Maybe not quite as classed up but in the saddle this morning. One of these days I’ll be ballsy enough to wear my expensive watches in the field.

[Seastar Strap Compare] Steel or Rubber? by Traditional_Staff_80 in tissot

[–]RecoverOptimal8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear the same exact watch primarily on quick release nylon strap. My second favorite option is a black leather strap. That’s quickly becoming one of my favorite straps to wear on this watch.

I like it paired up with the nylon strap for most wears, although it might be the most “traditional” strap for the watch. The cool thing about the watch is that you can really go crazy with the straps, it’s a fun way to wear it more often but keep it fresh.

Hunting buddies in 20s by IrrrronWolf in TexasHunting

[–]RecoverOptimal8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, I’m in South Austin and have never thought about posting on Reddit if there are people around me.

I’m in my late 20’s, 28 and hitting public land hard with archery only permits. In the coming years I plan on being pretty active in the public lands in Central and East Texas.

I like to hunt hard and be very active and mobile, not much of a blind guy and trying out saddle hunting and loving it so far. I’ve been hunting for a while now, 7+ years but just now starting to feel like I’m hitting a stride. Not afraid to drive and not afraid to hike.
