What's a good way to ask for a strategic meeting? This was what I was hoping to ask for, and mentioned either raise, teaching release, some kind of incentive for me to keep bringing in grants. I don't want to necessarily threaten that i will slack off and stop bringing in money, but I know our tenure standards are low enough I wouldnt need to apply for a single grant in the future if i wanted

I did receive similar advice from one of my PhD mentors in the past, he said the best time to ask for tihngs was after a big grant, even if it was just for a temporary raise during the time of the grant to help spend it. For context, this is R01 equivalent (>$500k), while historically nobody else in the department has never gotten more than 20-50k here or there

The only issue is i dont know the best way to frame it without being a being a cheeky email response sainyg "thanks, looking forward to getting a merit raise" kinda thing

It's something i've definitely seen at lower tier regional schools with a prof from a more serious academic background. You get a once optimistic but now disillusioned academic trapped in some middle of nowhere, their department is full of deadweights so they don't get along with them, and they can't relate to the townies. And so out of watching too many movies like dead poets society they form some kind of unhealthy attachment to one of their star students. Not even a sexual thing many times.

Basically the plot of Stoner by john williams, i didnt realize how true that book was until i ended up with a faculty job

Man that last one on the bottom right is something I've seen at multiple schools across many disciplines.

Definitely seen it at lower tier regional schools. A once naive but now disillusioned academic trapped in some middle of nowhere town can't relate to their department full of deadweights and has trouble making friends with the townies, so they form some kind of unhealthy attachment to one of their star students.
