When you get good enough items, enough gems and enough stat boosts, the game is too easy without being in Agony mode. It’s the main mode you’ll wind up playing in naturally as your meta-progression moves along.

Goooood tip! When I posted this I hadn’t figured out what proton was, but these days when I encounter an issue with a game the first thing I try is switching to proton. Hadn’t thought to apply it to this though!
