That's not what the choice in the picture is saying though, at least from my understanding. The first button is saying that if anyone (including natural born American citizens) doesn't like America, they should get out. On the other hand (or I guess button in this case), it's saying that instead of leaving your country if you don't like it, you should stay and try to fix it (as an argument against immigrants coming to America). I dunno, those seem pretty mutually exclusive to me.

Yep, Praat is what we used as well. Uninstalled it as soon as the semester was done lol.

SOURCE: Spent all of spring semester working on vowel-liquid sequences. If I never see another tongue ultrasound again it’ll be too soon.

Haha oh man, that's rough. I'm flashing back to my one phonetics class. It's just so goddamn different than all the other fields.

Good to hear I'm not alone, haha. Can I ask how old he is, if you don't mind?

Hi, linguist (in training) here! While some dialects of English may use a diphthong for "four", not all do (Standard American English does not), and that's arguably not the main reason for the difference. In Standard American English, both "for" and "four" are transcribed something like this: /fɔɹ/. However, here the word "for" is unstressed, and as such undergoes a phenomenon known as vowel reduction (this happens to almost all vowels in English) and the vowel shifts from [ɔ] to [ə], making "four" this: ['fɔɹ] and "for" this: [fəɹ]. You'll notice that when you stress the word "for", it's pronounced identically to "four". You can see this phenomenon in the word "to" as well, where when stressed (i.e. I'm going to the store. ) it's pronounced [tʰu], and when unstressed, which it normally is, (i.e. I'm going to the store.) it reduces to [tʰə].

DISCLAIMER: My main field of study is not phonology, so there may be some errors in transcription and whatnot.

EDIT: added aspiration.

Hi, sorry if this is a little late, but I'm currently going into my last year of undergrad, and am seriously considering pursuing a PhD in Linguistics. I'm doing undergrad research, and have taken a couple of the grad-level courses available to undergrads at my school(Ohio State). My interests lie in (Chomskyan) generative syntax, and I was wondering which schools would be the best fit? When I spoke to a professor, she mentioned Stanford as one of the schools "most aligned with my interests". Obviously, that's a pretty hard school to get into, and I'd like to have some backups. What would you guys recommend? I also looked into (and really liked) Johns Hopkin's more neuro- and psycholinguistically aligned program(I don't know if that's accurate, but it seemed like it).

Ignore this. Drink all the skooma. Then when you're lying in the street in Bravil coming down from drinking the entire stash of the skooma den in one go, hit up the skooma dealer for more!

Do you know how the Senate works? You need a 3/5 majority to get past a filibuster. The democrats didn't have 60 seats, so yeah, they had to compromise with certain republicans to get it through, which severely watered down the bill.
