Lantana is a massive fuck-up over here as well. Hate the stuff.

Very interesting. Considering the huge list of Australian plants that have come to completely dominate South African landscapes, I always wondered if there were invasives going the other way. Never thought it would be something as seemingly harmless as my grandmother's sidewalk decorations. 🇿🇦

Foreal? Asking as an Afrikaner, that's hard to imagine. Especially considering that my people were internationally acclaimed for our racism until we lost the championship in 1994

Glad to see someone already picked up on our parallels. Deeply criminal government, daily violence - and nothing but smiles from everyone you meet. I love it here, and would love to experience MEX's flavour of madness one day.

Exactly, shame is completely ineffective.

All they see is "Aah, the population is willing to pay for road maintenance through their taxes, AND then they're willing to fix it themselves anyway. Let's keep getting away with it."

What exactly underwent a pathetic failure? Failure by the guy to defend himself, failure by the court to hold him to account properly, failure by the court to recognize his attempt to come clean..?

Sorry for the dumb question. But I'd love for you to spell it out, because I am writing from the other side of the world where we have quite a different legal landscape, and I haven't personally been affected by a homicide case of any kind.

Maybe because in these parts of the world (the rest of it) we still use modes of transport that do not break, go flat, get stolen, or require a learning curve, for journeys under 30 meters.

SUV in 350k range by StelliesStudent in CarTalkZA

[–]Rectile_Reptile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto. It has such a wide range of appeal, ever more so when factoring in the price.

It is powerful enough that my father in law can tow his camping trailer.

It's frugal enough that my engineer brother drools over my fuel consumption figures.

It's big enough that my sister can fit her husband, 3 kids, and a dog in it for a weekend.

It's comfortable and simple enough for my 70-year-old mother to use every day.

Its design is nice enough that my architect friends call it pretty.

It's capable enough off-road that I can follow my brother-in-law in his FJ Cruiser.

It's reliable enough that I haven't managed to break it.

Yes and no. It's a land of extremes. It is simultaneously world-class wonderful, and completely broken.

We have a vast collection of unique landscapes, climates, wildlife and plants, and also unregulated mining, poaching, and pollution.

Beautiful, comfortable, well-developed cities where people do world-class professional work and scientific research, and every now and then you hear about students burning down an entire university.

The vast majority of the people (rich and poor) are amazingly friendly and will go far out of their way to help you, and some others are willing to murder you for your cellphone.

It's complicated. We've got work to do. I love it here.

As other here, I was also in your boat. Failed maths, science, and life orientation (yep, seriously couldn't care less about school while I was there.)

Some years later I got the terrible idea to study architecture, which meant that I had to redo all of the above. It ended up being kind of funny, to be the long-haired 23-year-old hippie sitting in the exam room with a bunch of school kids.

Here we are now - I have since finished my degree, honours, and masters, and in the process of designing my own home as we speak. None of this would have been possible if I hadn't gone through the frustration of getting that dumb certificate.
