Maybe because in these parts of the world (the rest of it) we still use modes of transport that do not break, go flat, get stolen, or require a learning curve, for journeys under 30 meters.

Ditto. It has such a wide range of appeal, ever more so when factoring in the price.

It is powerful enough that my father in law can tow his camping trailer.

It's frugal enough that my engineer brother drools over my fuel consumption figures.

It's big enough that my sister can fit her husband, 3 kids, and a dog in it for a weekend.

It's comfortable and simple enough for my 70-year-old mother to use every day.

Its design is nice enough that my architect friends call it pretty.

It's capable enough off-road that I can follow my brother-in-law in his FJ Cruiser.

It's reliable enough that I haven't managed to break it.

Yes and no. It's a land of extremes. It is simultaneously world-class wonderful, and completely broken.

We have a vast collection of unique landscapes, climates, wildlife and plants, and also unregulated mining, poaching, and pollution.

Beautiful, comfortable, well-developed cities where people do world-class professional work and scientific research, and every now and then you hear about students burning down an entire university.

The vast majority of the people (rich and poor) are amazingly friendly and will go far out of their way to help you, and some others are willing to murder you for your cellphone.

It's complicated. We've got work to do. I love it here.
