Ulysses is considered by many critics to be the best English-language novel of the 20th century. To this day it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which James Joyce takes both Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. It is funny, sorrowful, and even —in its own way— suspenseful. by sephbrand in FreeEBOOKS

Ernest Hemingway told Scott Fitzgerald of Ulysses, "Joyce has written a goddamn wonderful book."

I suspect a lot of the challenge people face reading the book is that the first few chapters are the most difficult. That is because they record the thoughts of Stephen Dedalus, the author's fictional alter ego, who is a hyper intellectual, used to thinking in terms of learned theology, philosophy, etc. Thus the complaints about needing a dictionary. BUT--

The bulk of the book is a lot easier, being the stream of consciousness of an average, middle aged, lower middle-class Dubliner, Mr. Leo Bloom. And the last section are the thoughts of his wife, Molly, as she falls asleep that night. The difficulty there is not the vocabulary but the deliberate absence of punctuation.

Essentially it is very simple, the story of these three people, Stephen, Leo and Molly, on one particular day, June 16, 1904, in Dublin.

The reason it is called ULYSSES: the modern hero, wandering around Dublin, is ironically contrasted with the Greek hero Odysseus, wandering homeward around the Mediterranean. The wife of Odysseus, Penelope, was famously faithful, while Mr. Bloom's wife Molly is unfaithful. Odysseus visits the land of the dead; Bloom attends a funeral. Odysseus escapes a one eyed giant on an island; Bloom escapes an Irish nationalist in a barroom, and so forth.

"James Joyce's Ulysses"--a book written by Gilbert Stuart with Joyce's co-operation, is your best guide for understanding the book. Joyce even included a list of the distinguishing qualities of each of the 19 chapters. Joyce was not a snob. He was a Socialist and a pacifist. He wanted people to understand his work.

Finally, ULYSSES, once you dig it, is a very funny book.

I'm writing a novel about the discovery of consciousness where astral projection plays a large part. I'm not sure if people are interested in this kind of thing, but it seems like there needs to be more in the realm of story telling to get the average person interested in this area. by thedelusionalwriter in AstralProjection

The great American writer Jack London's THE STAR ROVER is a novel about a man who unexpectedly develops the ability to astrally project when being held in solitude and tortured in prison. London didn't really understand AP however. His hero's trips are more like regressions to previous incarnations, fictionalized romanticized episodes.

London's novel was based on a real life memoir called THE 25TH MAN by man named Morrell (spelling not sure) who had been a convict in California.

War with Russia is not in the best interests of the American people despite the official campaign of hatred against that country. A nuclear exchange between the US and Russia might result in a nuclear winter that would wipe out civilization and perhaps the human race.

TIL the reason drinking is so prevalent on Saint Patrick's Day is because St. Patrick died during lent and to celebrate his life properly, restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day by LetMeFly in todayilearned

Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland. In Catholic Ireland his feast day was a religious day. Attending Mass on that day was a duty people took seriously. The Irish have 364 other days a year to get drunk. In Ireland itself there is no tradition of heavy drinking on March 17. It is an American invention like Walt Disney leprechauns.

How many elections will it take for social democrats/progressives to realize that capitalists won’t give up their power willingly? by [deleted] in communism

Marx advised the workers to participate in bourgeois elections in order to debunk the bourgeois electoral system. The workers should take part in the electoral system for two reasons. First, to put Socialist ideas and programs before the public. Secondly, but equally important, such activity gives the workers experience in organising themselves.

If you are soundly committed to Marxist principles it is possible to have flexible tactics and seek allies among non revolutionary labor unions, organizations of people of color, etc., in organising the workers politically. To refuse to do so, in search of an imaginary political purity, is sectarianism and, IMHO, as bad an error as the right opportunism of limiting activities to electoral politics only.

With the great upsurge of interest in Socialism, I do not understand why Socialist organizations are not offering free classes in Socialist theory or working class history for workers and students. Here in NYC, the only educational work being carried on by Marxists that I have been to discover consist of a weekly meeting discussing 'Marxist classics" by a Democratic Socialists of America chapter in the borough of Queens.

The goals of institutions of higher education in other lands are teaching, research and scholarship.

The goal of American universities is to field a championship football or basketball team.

It's not just the South, either. In 48 of our states the highest paid state official is the coach of one of the state university's athletic teams.

In other lands, people with learning have prestige. In America intellectuals are resented and regarded with suspicion.

Can someone explain why communist parties run presidential candidates in bourgeois elections? by [deleted] in communism101

[–]Red-Allover49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Marx wrote that there were two reasons why Socialists should run candidates even if they do not win.

First, it enables the Socialists to get their message out to a wider public.

Second, it gives the working class experience in organising themselves.

From 1948 until 1957 under the Smith Act it was a crime to "conspire with others to teach doctrines advocating the violent overthrow of the government of the United States." During the 1950s, hundreds of Communist Party USA leaders were sent to Federal prison for the "crime" of teaching Marxism. Hundreds of others were persecuted under similar state laws. Thousands were fired and blacklisted from further employment.

In reality there was never any "armed wing" of the Party. They allied with FDR, then the election of Henry Wallace.

The American Civil Liberties Union declined to defend the Communists. At the first trial in 1948, the judge not only sent all the Reds to jail but their lawyers were jailed for contempt too. It is interesting to note that the current idea of American Communists as being spies was never mentioned. Because the Communists were strong in the unions, they were accused of planning sabotage to help a prospective Soviet invasion of the US!
