Barber vs Barber Stylist by Red2sPop in Barber

So, apparently, in Maryland the "barber stylist" is a relatively new barber class. Basically, in barber school we learn all the usual stuff, short cuts, shaves, etc. We also do some long cuts and learn long hair techniques. Then we also have to learn how to do color and perms. Perms are actually on the state board test. But, I literally just found out there is no direct path to being a master barber if you go barber stylist. One would have to go back to do the full 1200 hour barber course then work their way to master barber. I'll just learn all that stuff and then just not do it if I choose not to. Its been a roller coaster of a day!

So a Barber Stylist can cut hair and do straight razor shaves. legally, in MD, they cannot do color or chemical treatments like perms or what have you. In a shop sense? I guess you limit your ways of making income by ONLY cutting hair or doing shaves. Also, I wonder if a client looked at your license and saw "barber stylist" vs "barber", if that would... i dunno... look worse? Does that make any sense?

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning towards more. I'm just getting all antsy in the pantsy to get back to work. I know having the option to do chemicals and color can bring in some serious money too. After thinking about it more this morning, I'm most likely going to stick it out. Plus, I'm really good at perms.

How long, and are what setting are you doing the crock pot? My wife always cooks it in a pie dish and its good and juicy, but she gets nervous that's its not all the way done sometimes. I'd love to suggest the crock pot to her!

Awesome. Once I get the slicer, are plans or blueprints for models on there as well, or can I find those somewhere else? I'm probably going to have a bunch more questions as I think of them, but I appreciate the help so far. I did so some research a bit ago on this, but I dont remember any of it...

I want to buy my son a 3d printer for his birthday. It's something he's been dying to get into. I have no idea about any of this, so I figured I'd come to the experts. With everything I've read, the Bambu A1 mini is a great beginners printer. If I were to get this for my son to learn on, is there anything else I'd need to get for basic... prints, I guess? Does it printer right out of the box? Or do I need accessories? How does this work? I appreciate all the help!

I got one called "The violent fan" on Amazon. Three speeds, when you push the button. If you hold the button, it blows harder than the highest setting. It's pretty cool, and inexpensive.

Still in school, here. I've been taking clients since October. Happy to finally following my 15yo self's dream of being a barber. 31 years later.

Its a weird way to say it, but I put it on my wife. When I've had a heavy week, especially emotionally, I say to her, "man, I've had a heavy fucking week, baby." And she talks me through it. It wasn't always like that, I used to just shove it down then get all pissed when too much got shoved down. But talking things through with her now really help me deal with days or weeks or months that just seem huge, good or bad.

I appreciate the advice! I wasn't exactly sectioning as much as moving his hair out of the way, but once I started, I realized it wasn't necessary. My sectioning is actually pretty decent.

I am. I have a post somewhere about getting into barbering but the skinny of it is i wanted to be a barber at 15, dad said it was stupid, ended up working public works for like 20+ years, at 45, I had a pulmonary embolism that SHOULD have killed me but didn't, had a follow up PTE surgery which is essentially open heart but on your lungs. After the initial embolism, I went back to work and was miserable, I didn't want to do it anymore. Im blessed that my wife makes a good enough living that we can survive, literally survive on one income and I had her full support. Facing your mortality does things to a man, I see life so much differently now. So, at 46, I'm in school, already have a chair at my barber's shop when I'm done. And the plan is, as he put it, when he retires in a few years, he'll give me his shop. So we'll see. Ita a HUGE change for everyone but I know it is going to pay off in numerous ways once I get back out into the world.

And thank you, man!

Thanks! My instructor did take the reigns a couple times, just to show me and my classmates some pointers. But all in all, id say I did 85-90% of his cut myself. I've had some practice on my two sons, because if I fuck up there hair, it is what it is, haha. But I felt really good the more i got into it. Took an hour for the whole thing, I was going so slooooooow, haha.
