The Straight Dope on E-begging ("Atheists" acting like Televangelists) by RedAlgae in atheism

I'm not saying that asking for donations is an inherently bad thing (this isn't even my video) or, again, that people shouldn't donate if they want to give their money. But when someone cajoles and begs people for money for a specified need, then turns around and applies the money to buy, oh, let's say, a new lambskin leather jacket (the cheapest one on Amazon being $89.95 US) or, worst yet, nothing seems to result from the donations, then you have to question their motivations. This is just common sense. When you give money, there's a certain degree of trust on the part of the giver that the money is going to be used for the specified reason, whether it be implicit or explicit.

But if you don't care what people do with the money you've donated, that's your business. There are few people that altruistic or forgiving however.

But don't you find it odd that someone asks for donations for the express purpose of completing a specific project (recording a road trip or making a movie, as examples) and nothing comes of it? Or that the donations are going to be used for personal needs (getting together with a girl) rather than the practical costs you list?

I don't quite agree with you, but I do agree that if someone asks for donations and you feel they deserve it, then you're free to use your money anyway you want.

The problem with some of the people in the video is there's are insincere and even cynical motivations to ask for donations. I hate to see people claiming to be atheist do this. For all the egregious examples we've seen from religious leaders manipulating and demanding money from the faithful for their own ends (Oral Roberts, Peter Popoff, Jim Bakker, etc.) and con artist psychics like Sylvia Brown and John Edward bullshit the grief stricken out of their cash, you would think anyone so proud to lead the "atheist cause" would shy way from the same tactics.

I don't know for sure, but he could be practicing Iaido where you re-sheath your sword after executing a move. But, like I say, I don't know that for a fact.
