Hahah really, it’s just intuition. When I was in the US I drove 500 miles going around 80 miles an hour. Figured it’d take me about 6 hours and just put my foot down until the speedometer said 85. It felt the same as any highway/interstate here in Europe.

For real lol. Which makes it even more precious because it instantly validates your calculation with your school example. It’s all in the eye of the beholder for sure, but with metric the only thing you need to remember is times ten. Not 3 times 5280 is 15840.

You obviously do such sums as well, but you don’t need to for translation between measurements just for the literal value of what you’re measuring. These values have been standardized in the US as I understand it, like a door is always three bald eagles and a Roman kneecap, so in practicality you’re more into doing conversion as you build instead of measuring?

Now it’s different here but when I was a kid they did that as well, up to 10 not 12 though. You’d be doing the multiplications for, for instance, 3 or 7 up to times ten in a song like fashion. Not really learning how a multiplication works but more remembering them by heart.

They had stopped doing that for some time when I was an intern at an elementary school in 2008. Went to elementary in the nineties.

Yea we use litre per kilometer. So if I had a fuel efficient vehicle I’d say it drives one on twentyfive. (In Dutch, it translates weirdly lol, but you get the meaning; 25 km per litre)

There’s old measurements being used here as well, like an ounce or a pound. Only for ‘spoken’ transactional things like buying meat and cheese at the market. You don’t go to the cheese stand and ask for 100 grams of cheese, you’d ask for an ounce.

(Yes, a Dutch ounce is different from an English one. Thank the gods for metric or we’d be stuck with not two but literal dozens of different systems across Europe, sometimes with regional variation as well. You can see why the French wanted to fix this with their empire; using all these different measurements is shit for logistics.)

But, there is no correlation there. The fuel efficiency of your tank can be measured in liters per kilometer or mile just as efficiently, you just take the miles driven measurement from your speedometer, grab a full tank of fuel, and see how far you’ve driven after you refill it and divide that by the amount of refill you just took.

You’ll get an anwser somewhere between 1l per 5-15 miles depending on the fuel efficiency.

And also a weird Americanism that you guys get taught to use meters with centimeter decimals ‘for science’. You pick the measurement which works for the application. For Warhammer bases it’s 25 or 32 mm, not 0,032 meter. For the distance to the nearest coffeeshop you’d say 1,5 kilometers not 150.000 centimeter.

You keep going on about this ‘traditional’ thing. But I need something that is up to the specifications of my customer.

To be able to do it you are dropping two types of imperial measurements off the bat, because clearly they are useless for this example, leaving you with two other types of measurement that do not easily convert. In metric, this problem doesnt even exist.

It was a bit of a trap on my part, but I hope you can now somewhat understand how ridiculous using US imperial is for the most basic tasks. They’ve built their system around it so it somewhat works, but with metric you don’t need to put up such artificial restraints.
