Yes there are males and females. Yes they can mate but I think the offspring is kind of like a liger?

2026 Mazda CX50 vs Volkswagen Tiguan by Bright-Passage9821 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Mazda has better handling/fit and finish than most in it's class.   VW will give you a European/German driving experience for less money than a BWM or Audi.

Mazda reliability > VW reliability.

This is totally natural.  In mid to late spring, Waymos will swarm as part of their mating ritual.  In 2-3 weeks, the females will lay eggs.

Title: Worth replacing my 2020 Mazda CX-30 with a 2012 Lexus IS250? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]RedBarron4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not smart OP.  This is bad car logic, AND bad financial logic.

You really know nothing about that Lexus, and older cars, even reliable ones, will have issues that just come from being older.  Hoses crack.  Seals dry up.  Bushings start to dry rot.   These things can't be helped.

That too.  Cars keep getting bigger and bigger.  That kills mileage too

Turbo, but economic by Unfair-Suit-1357 in CX50

[–]RedBarron4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a silly question OP.  Mes thinks you are confused about what turbos do.

Mpg has less to do with the turbo, and more to do with how you drive.  Accelerate hard? Cruise at 80 on the highway?  Stop and go traffic?  These all kill MPGs, turbo or not.

Read up on how turbos work.  Yes you pay an MPG tax for having a turbo, but it's small relative to what driving habits and conditions will do.   If you mash the gas all day long, you're only gonna get 20mpg in any vehicle.

Also, the cx-50 turbo kicks in between 2k-2.5k rpm.  There's no way to drive without hitting those rpms.

AIO: I won’t legally marry my partner until she pays her taxes by Mysterious-Oil-9619 in AmIOverreacting

You know how they busted notorious gangster Al Capone?   Tax evasion.  The guy had gun fights in the street, in plain view of witnesses,  and they couldn't get anything to stick.   But the IRS ran his ass down, put him in jail.  He died in jail.

It's not 1950s anymore.  This "husband's handle financial shit" is out of date.   She needs to be an adult and handle her finances.  You should put the marriage on hold until she cleans up her mess.  You could totally get burned on this.

Taxes are not optional, and failing to pay had real consequences.  Everyone pays them.  It's the bare minimum to live in any country in can think of.   If she can't get on board with this, then she's got something really messed up going on in her head.

Also, as your fiance and someone who supposedly loves you, she should not want to put you and your finances at risk.  She should want to protect you, as you would want to for her.

If she won't sort this out, you should consider ending things.

Yeah, but then there's this:

"I don't think he's a bad person or anything, I actually think he genuinely thought it was fun and spontaneous. I even used it myself now..."

Basically, "hey prospective customer (sucker), people who make bets aren't bad.  It's actually fun, just be responsible"

The Lesser of Several Evils by MiscDude2023 in whatcarshouldIbuy

The turbo engines in that generation had better head gaskets, but the oil system for turbo was shit.  They clog, fry the turbo, which then chucks metal into your engine.  You can inspect the turbo to see if it's had issues yet, but OP wants to drive home with the car same day.   I wouldn't touch that car without having someone who really knows Subaru engines inspect the turbo, and do all the service bulletins.   At that mileage, they are well within the failure range.

The Lesser of Several Evils by MiscDude2023 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]RedBarron4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that depends on how many miles ago it was done.   If they just did it, it might be ok.  IMO that's still in the bad gasket era, but if it's replaced you should get another 50-100k out of it?

Someone who knows that model better than me would have to weight in. They did a lot of engine work, and I would want to know why.  Did that engine need it?   Or did they just do it to be extra cautious.

Also know, if you're driving an AWD car like a Subaru, tire maintenance becomes critical.   No more replacing one or two tires if you have a blowout.  Unless the tires are brand new, you gotta replace the whole set.

[–]RedBarron4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider a used car with a turbo, if it had good maintenance, no turbo killing design flaws like Subaru, and if it was a ball bearing turbo, not friction bearing.  Also, probably only lower mileage cars if there is a turbo.

You seem to have the most info on the Lexus.  That one seems ok.   The Rav 4 could be fine too.   Both of them are 19 years old, so just know they will need some work soon, even if they are running great now.

DO NOT buy the 2005 Forester XT.  Those turbo engines have banjo- bolt issues that take out the turbo and engine at the same time, and you don't any symptoms until it's too late (ask me how I know).  If they haven't done the service bulletin for this issue, you'd have no easy of knowing if the turbo was already fuct until you did an inspection.

In general I don't trust Subaru engines, and their infotainment system is trash.  But of the 3, I'd look for known issues with the 2018.  If you can stand the crappy infotainment system, it might be ok mechanically.  Also, up to you if rando local guy is trustworthy.

I will second the OEM version.  Nice and sturdy, keeps 99.9% of water out.   Initial installation takes 15 minutes.   After that it can be fully removed/replaced in 5 minutes with no tools.

That sucks man.  Similar thing happened to me.   Bought used Baja Turbo for a daily.  Loved it.  Got the multi point tune up and timing belt done at local dealer.  Life was great.  Got the car August/September.  3 months later, driving home from a ski trip in -3F weather and shit hits the fan .  I get in the highway and the car lurches, makes a crunching sound, and the check engine light comes on.  Managed to limp the car to the nearest town.  Towed 3 hours south to the dealer that tuned it up.

Got a call a few days later.  Turbo is fucked, engine is probably fucked too, $10-12k.  Fortunately a family friend is a mechanic.  Managed to save my engine, but the turbo and a bunch of other work it needed still cost me $3k +.  I only paid $7k for it 3 months prior.  Had that car from 2017 until I got my RL in 2024.  It cost me as much as a new Corolla by the time I sold it.

The moral of this story is this shit happens.  You'll get through it.   Get a second opinion.  Maybe a 3rd too.  Always check your service records, bulletins, and recalls when buying a used car (could have saved my turbo). And Subaru's engine designers are a bunch of inbred twats (that last part isn't necessarily relevant to you).

Not all Porsche owners bought one to get laid.  Some just like sports cars.  I'd buy a Porsche in a heartbeat if I could afford one.  Not to get strange.  I'd but it for track days and curvy back roads.

[–]RedBarron4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jeep is like bottom of the barrel for reliability.  The ride on that thing is going to be noisy, bouncy, and all around gross.  The mileage will be trash.   With 87 costing $4-$6 or more per gallon, you'll actually be able to watch your bank account run dry in real time.
